Some of the friends that I climb with are EMTs and RNs. I am a paramedic. Other people I have climbed with usually have a first aid kit and know enough to stop bleeding and fashion a splint. But we allways carry a cell phone. John

I know basic first aid. When I go with my dad, he has a first aid kit, plus he is a nurse. When i go climbing with clint (ratstar)...I hope hes got one;) I always have a cell phone though. And when i got climbing with my friend and his dad, i know im in good hands. He knows extencive first aid, and always carries a cell phone and is a very safe person. I always make sure some one i am going with has a cell phone, and most of the time, we have more than one.

Good, I think that all should have a basic knowledge of first aid. I'm no EMT (I'm an Eagle Scout), but I have had to save a couple lives before and I am greatful for my knowledge of first aid. Everyone make sure to carry a cell phone, a first aid kit, and a book on basic first aid with them when ever climbing. In the first aid kit have medical gloves. Please "be prepared!"

Im a EMT with certifications in High Angle and Rope Rescue and presently looking for Confined Space/Cave Rescue. I have a good sized First Aid kit most times.Only time itsnot in my bag is when the base is one that i can drive to them I have my EMT bag a feew feet away..As the saying goes "Its better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it" Luckily I have had to use it only once and to never have to use it again. It makes me a much happier person to have to replace something because its out of date then to have to replaces it because it was used..Climb often and climb safe

First aid and food handling certified . I also always pack a cell phone, and have family band or CB radios with me. I've never had to use first aid training, but if I ever need to, I'll be comfortable with what I know. Every climber should know atleast basic first aid procedures.

I've got all the basic first aid and CPR certifications, plus a wilderness first aid one. I'm hoping to my WFR soon. Usually when I climb it's with poeple who do have their WFR or are EMTs or something so I've never had to handle any serious situations, but at least I'm confident that I'd be prepared for something if it ever came up.

Good, I'm happy to hear that many climbers have first aid knowledge, and that many have not had to use it. Lets keep it that way! Always be prepared and check everything twice.

I have basic first aid, community CPR, and I am starting my first responder class in a about 2 weeks. I also have emergency management training in spotting severe weather, hazmat, incident command, and on and on. I always have a first aid kit, a cell phone, and an FRS radio with me.

I'm first aid trained, and have also completed a wilderness first responder course.

When I'm out in the wild I always carry along a first aid kit... have never really needed it for myself, but especially while hiking I have run into lots of people that needed some aid.

EMT and WEMT, the latter i definatly feel is more applicable to many of the places i climb though. Never had to use any real first aid in a climbing situation (knock, knock, knock) but it definatly makes me feel better. I think even basic training is great and on a whole i think the main thing is common sence and an ability to stay calm and think clearly, you could be the most over qualified person in the world and if you freak there is going to be another injury or at least additional problems.
Learn as much as you can and know how to use those skills. My 2 cents.

I'm a WFR (Wilderness First Responder) and looking to get my WEMT (Wilderness EMT). In my personal opinion, NO ONE should be out climbing with anything less than standard First Aid/CPR training. Climbing is a dangerous sport. Eventually you or someone you are climbing with is going to get hurt. Plus there are so many kooks out on the rocks these days that on any given day you stand a pretty good chance of running into someone who's taken a fall (not to mention all the other everyday accidents that happen). As climbers it is our responsability to be prepared to deal with the hazards and situations we are putting ourselves into. We also need to watch out for one another and more importantly those folks who come out to the rock unprepared to deal. I can't even tell you how many times I've used my training while out climbing. It should be an integeral part of learning to climb!!!

I've kept my FA/CPR training current every year for the last decade... and you can add me to the list of those those not haveing to use it for anything other than Very minor things so far... and hopefully, through proper planning, wont...

I would say that the majority do not. However, wall climbers (I would imagine) do, but I may be off base on that. I have taken WFR training, I don't know many climbers that know how to actually handle a real emergency, but I recommend having basic knowledge of first aid. Even a good book is a good idea. Read it and practice things with a friend. Never a bad idea to know first aid, especially when engaging in activities that have inherent dangers (such as rock climbing).

I don't know. Am I off base on that comment? From my experience, I'll say I'm right (based on my experience). Anybody have any opinions?

I'm glad to see that many climbers have at least a basic knowledge of first aid. Lets hope that people climbing at my crag also do. Unfortunately I do not have that knowledge and on top of that I dont react well at all to blood and gore in general: I have a tendency to get dizzy and I fainted last time I had to deal with a syringe. People that know me don't even talk about injuries when they're around me. I realize this is a serious problem for a climber and I am looking into resolving it. A shrink once told me that it was a kind of phobia and could be cured with consultations. Shrinks are expensive but unless someone has a better idea...

I've been slacking in this area. There's a NOLS book on Wilderness Medicine and a different Mountaineering Wilderness Medicine book that I've been meaning to get.

There's a NOLS weekend class on Emergency Wilderness First Aid (not for professionals but one rung below) that I've been eyeing too. The other classes are a little too pricey and require too much time committment considering I don't plan to guide.

Reading other posts though was a reminder to renew CPR certification.
