Please take this 3 minute online survey if you have ever bouldered in Smuggler's Notch. This is being conducted for a research project for one of my classes at Johnson State College. Thanks, you'll be helping out a fellow climber! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=432931421557

Thanks to all the folks that have filled out the survey so far! If you still would like to participate in the project there is still time to do so. I guess I should be more clear that this is for people that have climbed in Smuggler's Notch Vt as the study is site specific. I have posted it it in the bouldering forum as to not limit only people from Vt or the North East as some folks may have climbed here at some time during their journies. Thanks for all the help! http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=432931421557

Surprised you did not mention parking issues or traffic problems. You never asked about using chalk or the water runoff that ofter occurs on the North side of the parking lot and how one traverses it. On the other hand, I do hope that this will assist in defining the trails better and maybe a trash can here and there for those who don't climb. I find that the trash that I have picked up seems to be from tourist, not climbers, like cute drawing from kids and film packages ... Alan

I've merged the two identical/duplicate threads into one, just in case you're confused.

Alan Alan- I agree that parking is an issue, especially on those busy leaf peeping weekends, I do however think that a majority of the issue regarding parking, and trash as you pointed out, is not due to climber use. I think that those issues will be addressed in the state's land management plan, which includes the construction of two parking lots and info booths at both the North and South entrances to the Notch. I'm not sure what your refrence to the water runoff is in regards to. I'm assuming that you are talking about the small little stream that runs by the pit toilets (which is another issue that the state has addressed in their management plan, replacing them with new composting toilets). As for the chalk issue I have decided not to address it in my survey but it will be brought up in my final research paper. Acording to a paper published by the Access Fund it states "Chalk appears to cause little if any physical effect to the rock resource. The effects of chalk use on rock surfaces, lichens or plants growing out of the rock, or wildlife is not thoughly understood at this time, but there is no evidence that chalk use causes harm to these or other vaules in any bouldering area." It is my beleif that we the climbers are not the biggest impact that the Notch encounters, but none the less we do have an impact. Thanks for filling out the survey and picking up little kids cute drawings. -mike http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=432931421557

Hey Mike, Yea, the water is the little stream that run by the toilets. It can become more then that after a good rain. Maybe a drainage pipe can be added? I agree that the majority of the damage done is not due to climbers. What can be done? Don't know cause people just head out in every direction after they exit their cars. I do hope that this is the beginning of developing better trails in the boulder areas. Keep up the good work. Alan

parking is the biggest issue. But even on a busy summer weekend it seems to work. I wouldn't want to see any more or larger parking areas. I also think that most who boulder there don't go on crowded days like weekends. Bob

For those of you who've said that bouldering isn't the largest impact in the Notch, you may be right, but don't be so sure. Speaking as someone who's been climbing in the Notch since LONG before the current bouldering craze, I can say from personal experience that the herd paths, soil compaction, and devegetation in the immediate vicinity of the popular bouldering areas has increased astronomically since bouldering became the "in" thing. Whether the pebble wrestlers are the largest impact or not, they are certainly the most visible one, and that's all it takes to rile up land managers. Thanks a million, Mr. Kemple. -Nubbler
