looking glass (depends on what part of PNF you'll be in....).

if you really want to boulder, head to Rumbling Bald, about an hour away (once again, depending on where you'll be camping/packing).

thing is its a group trip unless i plan on driving up myself, so im guessing if i ride w/ them im going to be limited to the park and wount be able to get to far away from the group-insurance reasons on there end, but i could get lost for days and be alright, NC is home... no matter where ur at

i was more or less looking for something in the park but thanx anyways, i may just skip out catch the ride up, dip, and get someone to ride out somewhere near there

any one up for climbing near this areas this weekend?

Where specifically are you going? There are four separate districts. What's the closest town? What trail are you looking to hike?

Can't help you much without more information... I'm sure you'll run into some rocks at some point.

You can boulder around on shining rock a bit if you go up that direction (seems to be a popular group hike).

alright got the goods

well be up in the far right (upper right) district. Mostly wilderness area, think where camping first night at the boy scout camp and then hiking up to cold mtn. Sleeping that night at the base, and hiking back to the vans sunday...

Leader said the trails almost entierly vertical so i know theres gotta be rock?
Anything near there worth hauling up my climbing shoes?

Hmm.... Which side of cold are you coming from?...

[checking]

Ah.... I think I see the daniel boone boy scout camp to the west of cold mountain. That's probably where your coming from. You will be on the art loeb trail and then you'll reach a fork about a mile and a half before the summit. The art loeb trail continues south, while your group's trail goes up to cold mountain. Shining rock is about 2.5 miles south. It's not great, but it would be suitable to boulder on. Maybe you could convince your group to hike harder/faster and go out there as well.

On the other hand, you may get lucky and find some boulders along the way. I'd bring the shoes just in case.

Sounds like your in the lower left district. LOL No sweat.

Also it sounds like your going to be a few miles from Shining Rock, a massive quartz outcropping. I may be wrong, but I think you'll hike up to Deep Gap. To the left is Cold Mountain (2 miles) and your destination. To the right is Shining Rock (2 miles). If you don't mind hiking an extra 4 miles, I'd say check it out. I think it's a relatively flat walk, but consult the map anyway..

Don't get to jacked about bouldering. I don't recall it being that good. Lots of nasty landings. But I haven't been there in about 15 years.

And if you decide to split from your group and camp near Shining Rock, head over to Old Butt Knob. I don't think it gets much traffic and you may actually find some fire wood.

Here's a pretty decent page.http://www.southeastclimbing.com/...carolina/cold_mt.htm

One last thing - From what I've heard, camping at Cold Mountain is a pretty cool thing. You may want to skip Shining Rock and just enjoy the trip.

Don't forget the vino.

yeah thats what i figured, 4miles for some cruddy climbs, even though i would enjoy the hike, would irratate me if i didnt find alteast a good 2-3hrs worth of decent climbing, im probably just going to keep my eye open on the trail...and of course i got the "vino"
Being an original bluegrass child im packing the the Makers Mark, nothing beats Ky
