Come on you Mark Twights in training! Give a lazy climber that enjoys hanging onto the oval biner attached to his ets, some tips on training. So far, I am running (jogging flat surfaces) 15 miles a week. I am joining a gym to work on my muskles (This is so I look more like a heart throbb in the 1980's than for the purpose of climbing) and I'm eating right. I plan on hiking with a backpack full of weight. Am I going down the right road??? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, -tda

Forget running on flats, you'll just get good at flats. Find a hill, the steeper the better, and start doing laps on it. Add a backpack, more weight, etc. Do it in snow, if you can. Wear your mountain boots. Make your workouts multi-hour, no one hour sprints. Like any sport, the closer your trainning is to the real thing (be progressive!), the better it will be.

In reply to: Any info would be greatly appreciated. Lottsa ways to get in shape but some are more effective than others. Carrying heavy packs works but is very time inefficient and puts you at greater risk of knee injury -- old school. Start with a good book. Then figure out what's best for you...not the teenyboopers without a life that abound here.

I think your best alpine workouts this time of year involve this: http://img478.imageshack.us/...50/2676716img8eu.jpg Brutus of Wyde rips the fresh somewhere in the Sierra back country As often as possible. To each season... its own. DMT
