I'm looking for some stuff that I can solo around Sedona AZ. Something that I could do in a half day that takes me to the top of a nice ridge or spire with class 3-4 scrambling. An occasional 5.1 or 5.2 move would be OK.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Also, if you're looking for a belay slave to head up the mace or some other moderate spire climb, I'll be down that way in mid November.
(Can lead 5.9, but I've never climbed on Sandstone)

Try Capital Butte right to the north. Great scamble, I would do it again. Get a topo map and go for it. There is some what of a trail. Starts in a wash on the south east side. Good luck.

Bump

I'm looking for some either scrambles up to low 5 or some fun, long routes I can rope solo.

Also, where in town can I buy a topo and is Toula's Cheap way to Die still available?

Check www.gearexpress.com for Toula's books. Canyon Outfitters in Sedona should have all the topos you need (real topos, not climbing topos).

I'd also recommend Capitol Butte. A little chossy, very exposed, and IIRC the second tallest rock in town (after Wilson Mtn--a mod/stren hike). Check the topo, the southeast is the best approach. I did some adjacent scrambling to the north and it's pretty vertical from those gullies.

There are several short buttes connected by ridges near there. The brush is pretty thin manzanita up there, so it's not like the "eat your legs alive" brush lower down.
