hey all...

my family's coming into town this weekend, and weather permitting, i'd like to take my nephew out top roping. he's about 5 years old, and loved goingi n the gym.

do any of you know where there's any place around with super easy kid rated stuff with decent top rope anchor set ups? a quick and easy approach would also be nice, since the grandparents would wanna go as well...

thanks...

josh.

There are a bunch of easy TR on Flagstaff Mtn. Do you live in boulder? or know the area?

i could do that...but i've already taken him to a gym. the idea is to go outside.

cos my lack of knowledge of easy local climbing spots corresponds with my top rope anchor knowledge? maybe i'll just stay home.

crown rock seems to be the place, thanks for the suggestion.

alas, the weather looks to be in the mid 50's for when they're here, and they are from phoenix, so even if it were in the 70's, i think they'd be freezing.

I don't know how warm it would be, but also consider the Amphitheater/Gregory Canyon in the Flatirons. Not a bad hike, lots of easy stuff, easy TR setups.

Oh, and I'm from Phoenix too... they're gonna be cold at all times anyway ;) I was shivering in Boulder in June.

I've had great success taking noobs to Cat Slab in Clear Creek Canyon. There's a really short 4 there that is good to give them a sense of how it all works. Then there's a 100' 7 off to the right that is super fun. And if they are still feeling perky, you can have them do a 110' long 8 all the way over on the left. Of course, you have to be careful not to drop them off the end of your rope and make sure they don't do the same to you.

The major drawback to Cat Slab is that you have to climb the routes on lead to set them up. I have them belay and use a backup belayer as well, but I still consider myself to be basically free soloing as the odds of a noob catching a leader fall are not very good. (PLEASE: don't respond to this post offering advice along the lines of "just give them a grigri and you'll be fine")

Climbing with little tikes can be super fun, or a complete disaster. Be prepared for both.

Go to Table Mtn. Easy walk up to the top of the cliff. Almost all sport anchors. There is at least a couple of 5.6-ish slab things. It also bakes in the sun. Then when you are done for the day go down to the Coors brewery, sign up for the short tour and go straight to the bar for three free beers...

This is a bullshit suggestion. I've taken little kids climbing, with enough adults around it's fine.

It would be a problem if he put himself in a situation where the 5 year old in a situation where safety is in any way based on this kids ability (climbing speed, belay, hiking speed, gear setting, gear cleaning, knot tying, route finding, judgement, etc).

I give the Vegan Boy more credit than that, he doesn't seem too stupid. Of course I could be wrong, I've never met him.

Supremacy rock in Eldorado Canyon is also a great place. you can have a picnic by the river and top rope a 30 foot 5.6. I took a bunch of my younger cousins there last summer and had a great time.

Check out Simple simon slab.

Well, I would say lookout mountain. I know it isn't all that close, but it has easy climbs. Top ropes are easy to set up too.

thanks for the vote of confidence, angry. i'd like to think that i'm not too stupid. of course, so would those who actually are too stupid...

to everyone else, thanks for the suggestions. i think i'mma go with the east face of crown rock, where it goes all the way down to 5.2. it's close to the road, so the grandparents will be able to make the approach, and there's enough stuff there that if we get there and it's crowded, or cold enough to warrant not setting up a complete top rope, we could also just boulder around...

happy thanksgiving, kids...

Were you the one in Eldorado Canyon on Thursday with the young girl 50 feet up and unroped? Whoever that was scared me. Why was she up there, climbing on her belly, without a rope? Granted it was 5.0, but she clearly didn't know how to climb.

I think the OP said nephew, as in boy so it probably wasn't him.

Gary, this is just mean. You know how us old folks hate that nasty ass hike up to the top. :P He did say grandparents.

Nip Tuck Crag has some easy stuff just to the right of the finger crack. Easy top rope setups and a super short approach.

The Boulderado is close to the road and has some easy stuff that you can set up by walking around.

The Rock Island in front of Dome Rock. Zero approach. Some easy variations.

The corner of Castle Rock that faces the road has an easy route ending at a pair of bolts. Zero approach.

These are all in Boulder Canyon, BTW.

unfortunately, i ended up throwing my back out on wednesday, before they got here, and it's still spazzing out. so no climbing for me.

altho i did set up the slackline for a bit on sunday. my dad, being a pretty heavy fellow, stepped on the thing and bottomed it out right away. his words, "i don't see what the problem is, this is just like walking on the ground."

thanks again for all the suggestions, perhaps when they come next time, i'll dig this thread back up...
