Just out of curiosity... how many climbers here take part in other sporting activities besides climbing? I'm fairly active myself in futsal and running. Do you find that indulging in other activities / cross-training actually helps in your climbing?

i tend to dabble in whitewater kayaking, and mountain biking, but both take a back seat to rock and ice climbing.

i do several other outdoor activities, but most of them are either not really 'sports' or are just for the purpose of training. i love riding my bike, but to tell you the truth i only really ride allot when i start seriously training for an upcomming climbing trip.

Rock Climbing is definitely first....but does Yoga...Stair Stepper...Taebo...and Kickboxing counts? Personally I find doing all those stuff helps in climbing... I only climb once a week .....so I do all those stuff during the week to make up......

Cardio (hard running, stepmill, cycling), Pilates or core conditioning once/week ... all go to "train" me for climbing. LOL I hope to take up tennis this spring/summer

Depends on the season really. Lately, it seems I use skiing, kayaking, climbing, running, and a bit of mtn. biking to cross-train for Bocce Ball (bowls/pétanque), river trips, and drinking. :D

I found personally that tai chi seems to help a lot with the climbing, both physically and mentally. It improves flexability, balance, breathing, and gives some degree of mental strength and focus. ymmv. I also ski, but that seems to hurt the climbing more than help it as it seems to waste the legs for a day or so - this could just be a lack of conditioning on my part at the moment...

I surf and trail run. Surfing usually will take priority since there is not always a swell where as there is always rock and it rarely rains in Southern California so that is usually not a worry. I do other activities but not enough to be serious about them. What about those people who fish in their ice huts on Lake Supeior. Is that a sport? Or the people who sweep the ice so the puck goes further. They are hardcore for just being in that crazy weather!

I like to tele, snowboard, play ultimate, kayak, and slackline. I think any activity potentially could influence you perspective on climbing if not help you physically.
