I'm traveling to meet a climbing buddy in Michigan's UP. I see there are a couple routes in Marquette.... But no directions.

1) Does anyone have specific directions to the bouldering/toproping in Marquette?

2) My friend is at Michigan Tech University: Anyone know of good climbing (TR, preferably) in the Houghton / Hancock area?

Thanks,

Andy

For those interested, I emailed climb@mtu.edu, Michigan Tech's climbing club. MTU is located in the Upper Penninsula, and here's what they had to say:

Hi Andy,

The best place to climb is at Cliff Drive, north of Calumet. Toprope is
the easiest thing to do there, as you have to hike to the top most of
the time to find the climbs. I don't have a guidebook unfortunately,
but rumor has it that Downwind Sports in downtown houghton has a copy,
maybe they can photocopy you some routes.

Hungarian falls has some bouldering, but it's not well marked and not
mapped at all. Just kinda word of mouth stuff. That's about it.
Marquette has a lot more.

Nick

One last followup on climbing in the UP: I was able to find and explore Marquette Mountain, and have posted information (including directions) in the Routes section under United States->Michigan->Central Upper Penninsula->MQT Mountain.

I have a few photos I'll scan in and post soonish. But if anyone needs information, there's more there now than was previously.

Andy

There's plenty of climbing in the western UP. If you are in the houghton/hancock area drop me a line and I would be glad to hook you up. Either send me an e-mail, or stop by Down Wind Sports when you get into town....I'm usually there.

For some real adventure check out Isle Royal... there is tons of bouldering/toproping to be done on it's rocky shores!
