Has anyone ever seen a rock climbing treadmill? I played around on one (before I started climbing) in Edmonton at a health club. I wish I had known what I was doing at the time.

Anyway, I haven't seen any mention of anything like this since I've started climbing and am beginning to think I made this thing up.

You stepped into a harness which had a wire on the back. When you climbed to a certain level, the tension on the wire caused the wall to move down (imagine a treadmill sticking straight up into the air). So basically you could climb infintely high (of course the holds repeated themselves as you went around the tread multiple times). The best part was that you could tilt the wall to over a 45 degree overhang.

Yeah. I am actually glad you mentioned it because I was starting to think I had made it up too!
I saw one at my dad's gym in Michigan. It seemed a little sketchy though. There was no harness and if the rotation tenstion was set too low the thing slipped down from under you.
But I think it would work with some guidance. My dad says he has never seen anyone use it though.

Here's a pic of one that was similar to what I climbed on...this one is way crazier though!

I saw one at the ESPN Sports Center in Chicago. Looked to be motorized and the longer that you climbed, the wall would move closer to a 45 degree angle to give more of a challenge.

I've used one, and it does not get my stamp of approval. The holds were even multicoloured so you could restrict yourself to one "route", but it doesn't teach you much at all. Backstep? Flag? Any other sound footwork? Don't bother. If you don't climb straight-on, hips square to the wall your pace will slow down too much and you'll get dumped. Want to reach something higher than shoulder height? Not an option. In the seconds it takes to move your arm up and grab the hold your foot will have moved down into the sensors and the wall will jerk to a stop. (This may not be an issue for really short people.) So basically, if you wish to climb an endless 5.6-, using poor form, this is the device for you!

Heh heh heh, I've climbed on that same treadmill-wall as you, Snapier. You didn't make it up, that monstrosity actually exsits. I thought it was neat before I really started climbing. However, I don't think they have ever washed the holds, it feels like climbing on butter.

Yeah I saw one of those at a rock climbing gym, and there's another at some other gym here. They look pretty neat, but I wasn't alloud to use the one at the rock climbing gym, they said I was too young (13). oh well maybe next time
