Access has been closed at Cerro Romualdo (San Luis Obispo, CA) since August. It is the best climbing in the county, but the past access procedures scare a lot of people away. A big meeting will be held tomorrow (Jan 20) with the National Guard and we will be lobbying that they reopen the base to climbers. Their reasons for closure are non-issues (soil erosion, sensitive plant life, liability issues). There are fewer than 100 public users a year there. It is state owned land and climbers have been climbing there with permission from the NG for over 10 years. Another base nearby allows hungting and fishing on their property. It might make a difference if you'd like to send a polite email urging the camp commander (Colonel Fisher) to reopen the climbing area at Cerro Romualdo. If you feel inclined to do so, the commander's email is kelly.fisher@us.army.mil
Again, please be polite, we have to get them to work with us, but YOU CAN make a difference.
Thanks, Tom Slater Author California Central Coast Climbs

keep bumping this. don't blow it off. these types of closures take precident when climbers don't fight them. if land use managers can get away with it, they'll close climbing always, since it's less work for them. you may not care about this particular area but these things can steamroll if we allow it to happen.

write a letter right now!

tom,

maybe you could make a quick rough draft of what you think they need to hear so that folks could basically use your form.

cut and paste form letter... thank you! revised

Dear Commander Fisher,

We are greatly concerned about the closure of Cerro Romualdo to the general public in regards to climbing. Climbers and the National Guard have been working together for over 10 years and it would be great if an agreement could be worked out. Educating climbers about sensitive issues will help guarantee a successful experience for everyone involved, but please don't just close your gates.

Sincerely,
