Are you kidding, 70 views and not one post? Is everyone busy emailing the Colonel or too busy talking about the latest backpack or their coolest fall? Who gives a shit if you don't live here. A crag lost is a big deal! They aren't making more! Freakin' email the colonel and just tell her (politely) to keep Cerro Romualdo open! Please and thank you!

Please pass this on to everyone you know who climbs (who cares where they live!)

cut and paste form letter (how easy can it get?)

Colonel Fisher,

please reconsider the closure of the climbing area at Cerro Romualdo. This place is precious and has great climbing. We are conscientious about how we treat our surroundings and will continue a leave no trace ethic while recreating at the peak.

Sincerely,

tslater

Colonel Fisher,

Hi Colonel Fisher,

As I understand it, the climbing area at Cello Romualdo is looking at permanant closure. If there is anything you can do to prevent this, I urge you to do so. Rock climbing is life for many of us, and it is deeply disturbing when places like this become unavailable. Please, evaluate this in your decisions.

The vast majority of the rock climbing community is extremely keen on what happens in and to the environment. We are usually the ones to enforce local ethics. We take exceptionally good care of the environment...it's part of us.

Thanks for your consideration,

tslater

Hi,

I posted the a message to the colonel with the message you suggested. Just remember that if we all do that, they will probably have their spamfilter remove these mails once she gets fed up with them.

Tslater,
I'm happy to send a letter, but would like a little background info. Where is Cerro Romualdo? Is it actually on a military installation? Which one?

Being in the military, I can see why it may be closed. The Colonel is responsible for the dafety of the installation. If she allows access to climbers, potentially less well-intentioned individuals could access the post. This means that the security forces may have to increase patrols, add new fences and security measures, etc. All of which means a significant investment of time, $$, and effort for many people. Much of which she may not have, especially if it's a small post.

For climbers, it's just access to a cool crag, for her it's the safety and well-being of personnel and equipment in her charge.

In addition to the emails, I would recommend trying to set up an office call with her to find out the issues from her standpoint and see what kind of effort for compromise can be made (if you haven't already done so). Do whatever it takes to build rapport. Heck, maybe she'd even be interested in setting up a guided climbing day for her and her staff--bill it as a team and confidence building exercise. That way she gains an appreciation for the value of the place as a climbing crag. The solution may be as simple as climbers signing in and out someplace.

All the devil's advocating aside, I agree that we need to make an effort to preserve access to crags and will be sure to send an email.

This would be a hard thing to do if we use our other email addresses, not rc.com. They will filter on this site if we use it. They really can't filter on the name, since other emails may have the name in the subject line. Bombard away!

Slight rewrite -

Dear Colonel Fisher,

As I understand it, the climbing area at Cello Romualdo is looking at a possible permanant closure. If there is anything you can do to prevent this, I would respectfully urge you to do so. Rock climbing is very important to many of us, and it is a great loss to this community when places like this become unavailable. Please, if you could sir - take this loss of climbing habitat into consideration in your deliberations.

The vast majority of the rock climbing community is extremely keen on what happens in and to the environment. We are usually the ones to enforce local ethics. We take exceptionally good care of the environment...it's part of us.

Thanks for your consideration,

I'm writing right now, but
A) Is Colonel Kelly Fisher a man or a woman? and
B) Where is Cerro Romuado? (And is that the right spelling?)

good questions...

Hi Colonel Fisher,

I have recently heard that the climbing area at Cerro Romualdo is looking at permanant closure. If there is anything you can do to prevent this, I urge you to do so. Rock climbing is a significant part of life for many of us, and it is deeply disturbing when wonderful places like this become unavailable. Please, consider this in your decision.

The vast majority of the rock climbing community is extremely keen on what happens in and to the environment. We are usually the ones to enforce local ethics and donate significant amounts of our time for area clean up days, trail maintenance, and even in teaching others about the joys of the wilderness. Another question, maybe for the Access Fund, is whether he/she has the authority to close it.
I read in a local newspaper article (http://www.timespressrecorder.com/articles/2005/10/26/news/news01.txt) that it was "state-owned property."
