Hello, I'm going to be moving up north in February. Looking for climbing partners; I climb up to 11ish on rock right now. I've got all the gear for sport or trad. Don't have any ice or snow experience (except bashing my knuckles on a couple of waterfalls in Arkansas) but I have tools and boots and I'd like to give it a try. If anyone's interested, pm me or email noshoesnoshirt@gmail.com Regards, Kerry

Hey good luck with your move. I lived in Albany for several years before moving to Maine, and it's not bad at all. You can zip down I-87 to the Gunks or head north to the Adirondacks for a less traveled path. One gym in Albany and another in Schenectady makes the winters easier to tolerate. I've never been in to ice, but there's plenty of it most years. Try posting a specific partner request in the NY Climber's Thread: http://www.rockclimbing.com/topic/87889

I'm also moving to albany with my girlfriend. I have a few questions. First the most important ones, how far is the gunks from albany? How far is the Catskills? Anything else close by, easy day trips after a day of work? How good are the climbing gyms? I know the gunks is close by and some awesome climbing, but curious are there any vertical cracks to be climbed? And also any Aid climbing around? Also, how close is mountain biking to there, are there good road biking too? And some more questions, what do you thinkare the best outdoor shops? The best place to live? I heard wasinghton park is the best place, but any other places that aren;t in the middle of a ghetto? I think that's all the questions i have I'll probably have more. If you guys feel like telling me anything i haven't asked, go for it! Eric

Ok let me answer some of your questions, the Gunks are the closest really good climbing and are between 1 and 2 hrs away (depending on your stance on speeding tickets, it's been done in 45 mins). As for gyms go to AIR off of central ave on Vitrano Rd (go to www.airrockgym.com) and is really sick if you want to climb hard (wednesday is the best day to come). Electric City Gym is in scenectidy and I also really good. No great cracks that I know of but I'm a boulderer so I wouldn't really know. The best outdoor shop is Rock & Snow in New Paltz

Have been here for almost 3 years. Indoors, Electric City Gym, Andy runs a great place, solids route setting. The daks and the gunks are about an even split, 1 1/2 pending where you want to be. Great cracks in the daks, Spiders Web is great for that. 5.9-5.12. Albany is pretty central. Summers suck, lots of rain and it seems to fall on the weekends. Housing is expensive for what you get. The best gear shop is the Mountaineer in Keene. Good luck, I am trying to get out and head to Colorado.
