Hey I just found out yesterday that I'm moving to San Pedro (just south of LA) at the end of the month. What is the climbing like around there? I mean all types, including indoor gyms, trad spots, top roping, bouldering. Obviously I know where Yosemite is, but thats about the extent of my California climbing knowledge. Thanks in advance for all the help!!

I live just on the other side of the bridge in Long Beach...

Good gym here, Williamson (sport) 1.5 hrs, Tahquitz (Trad) 2 hrs, Joshua Tree (Trad/bouldering) 2 hrs, Malibu Creek (sport/bouldering) 1 hr, the list goes on.

In addition to Adam's list, there is New Jack City, near Barstow, and Echo Cliffs, near Westlake Village, for sport. There's also Malibu Creek (sport and TR) and the High Desert, and many other smaller areas. Red Rock (trad and sport) about 4.5 hours near Vegas. Take a look at the routes data base (which is nowhere near complete) for a general ideal. When you get out here get the Southern California Sport Climber's Guide by Troy Mayr for an overview of the sport climbing scene. The trad areas each have their own guidebooks.

The climbing here is year-round. In the summer, you climb in the mountains; in the winter, you climb in the desert. You can't lose. Coming from Florida, I don't think you're going to be too disappointed!
