What's it like climbing at NRG in March? Cold nights? Warm days? Which areas would be preferred over others because of their aspect? How crowded does it get around spring break?

Usually COLD, at least for southerners. Endless Wall sees a lot of sun.

We had a good time on spring break there last year. Wasn't crowded at all. If you go where the sun is, it's not bad. Of course this is coming from northern New York (think Canada), so take that with a grain of salt. --JB

So would it be worth going to Summersville Lake, since it has a sunny aspect? What about the quantity and quality of routes between 5.7 and 10d? What parts of Endless Wall are best when there is a chance of it being cold?

Just wanna bump this to see if anyone can give us a heads up on what areas to check out for mid March. We might be heading there around the 14th or so, but we're not quite sure yet. The weather will dictate procedings I guess.

Mid March could give you any kind of weather imaginable. Could snow. Could be in t-shirt and shorts. Could rain (likely), could be dry. Bottom line is that the NRG is totally in season in March (even it is is unpredictable, but it's unpredictable all year long so March isn't any different!). If it is cool, certain areas are definitely better than others. Endless wall is on the sunnier side of the gorge (Kaymoor, is on the shady side, steer clear of Kaymoor if you wanna keep warm). For routes (sport?) between 5.7 and 5.10d, on Endless, you'd want to check out the Brain at Beauty (now that all those trees are down it's pretty sunny there), the part of Endless that you access via the Honeymooner ladders and check out Fool Effect (a really long 5.9, no anchors, need two ropes probably) and surrounding area (has low 5.10's) and Strike a Scowl is a must (5.10bish and TONS of sun and exposure). At the lake, some things will be sunny, some won't. I've found it's usually a bit more moist in areas than Endless in the winter, but it'll be totally fine. Check out the Orange Oswald routes and the Perot Routes for some pumpy 5.10's. The DC memorial boulder will probably be a bit chilly, but it has some really steep short elevens, if you wanted to check those out. I hope that helps. Have a great time! :P

I've had days on Endless and Beauty that have been awesome in mid Jan. and Feb. Your trip in March will be hit or miss in terms of weather, and your nights will most likely be a bit on the cold side. Nothing to bad though. I consider it a comfortable sleeping temperature if you have a decent bag. Anything that is south facing is where you want to be. Boss
