I recently heard this story from Doug Widdis(polarwid). I appreciate him allowing me to tell his story.

*I was told the link was screwed up so I logged on to fix it and in the process deleted the original message. Sorry.

umm, like, did you try asking him?

great stuff, but I hope you will pull it down if he decides that it's too personal.

I asked Doug if he minded before the article was approved and he said go ahead. I just know him to be rather humble and my initial post on this thread reflected the thought in my mind that the publicity might still make him uncomfortable. Good enough, jabbeaux?

I do not mind, but the focus of the story should be my DAD, not my minor sacrifice compared to his. Thanks Jody, as I said, I want to honor him, not myself.

Tim, take it easy, Jody is a friend of mine, and he asked if it was OK, and I said yes...

Nice, Jody! We all have the mountains in our hearts, but for some of us, it is even more personal.

Thank you Jody and Doug for sharing

Jody,
Excellent article that touches the heart.

Doug,
The real heros never do look for recognition for themselves. You belong in that category.

good deal. Doug, you're amazing.

Jody, don't read too much into my comment -- I just wondered why you wouldn't have asked him beforehand, which your initial post implied. No problems on this end.

Outstanding! This story reveals a wonderful spiritual dimension of climbing. My hat is off to both Doug and his father - thank you for sharing this tale.

I read it again... the new pics really add nicely to the narration.

I think that eagle kept you safe during your trek...

Thanks for your thoughts and comments. If it had not been that day (8th of August) I would have turned around when I saw I was in the wrong place. I know I was ill prepared for the conditions, Alaska can throw some weird weather at you any time of the year. Next time, I will carry a bit more on the survival and clothing side, and maybe an ice axe and crampons for the vertical shrubbery!

As a Vietnam Vet, I salute you ... as a son, my hand goes out to you, as a dad, I can only hope that I am as close to my children as you are to your dad.
