The land managers at Pictured Rocks and Indian Bluffs are doing a ``compatible activity'' study on climbing right now. They started February 2nd, and have 3 to five weeks to produce the report. Keep in mind that these lands are officially hunting preserves, and that climbing is an add on activity. The state biologist has long had concerns about climbers trails, intrusion of nonnative plants and destruction of rare ecosystems. Clearly this could change the face of climbing in Iowa. Get an email into dale.garner@dnr.state.ia.us who is the DNR official above the land managers, to let him know, politely, that you are in support of access to outdoor climbing at PR and Indian Bluffs. Also if you have good rapport with a state representative, now would be a good time to broach your interest in continued access at PR and IB. If the officials get the picture that climbing has a large base of support in the state it could at least ameliorate the outcome.

I just got an email from the eastern iowa climbers coalition today. This sounds like a very big deal, and we need to show as much support for climbing in Eastern Iowa as possible. EICC Website: http://www.geocities.com/eiowacc Thanks

Evan Fales has been working this the land managers and they seem to be listening to our concerns. A request for a temporary closure has been made, and as stewards of the environment we should be concerned about potentially damaging endangered species. Please respect this temporary closer, as this is only affecting a few routes. Thanks
In reply to: NOTICE 06/29/2006: There is currently a temporary closure for the north end of IB. This extends from Chimney Rock all the way to the Wedding Bells area. This is pending further study of the ecosystem, and the Compatible use evaluation. In general, they are worried about algific sites - sites at NE-facing rock faces that have cooler air in summer and tend to host unique plant/animal species.

Pretty ludicrous really, considering the amount of north facing rock out there that have no routes anywhere nearby, but I guess it's only 2-3 routes anyway. I doubt I'll ever climb out there again so they have my full compliance
