Cyberclimber,

And I'm going back to E-Rock tomorrow (hopefully), to practice for Yosemite.

I bouldered on upper Mt. Scott at night. Not a good idea, pretty rough up there. Lower Mt. Scott sounds inviting though.

Unfortunately, climbing is not permitted at night in the wichitas. Everyone needs to do your best to follow the rules so we can continue to climb in this amazing place.
Climbing access in the tas is actually kinda tenuous and is reviewed every five years.

I got a question. Are their any climbing or park fees? I just want to try and figure out how much cash I'm going to need. Thanks!

okie .. thanks for the input .. we'll find another time/place to night climb .. wouldnt want to jeopardize the tas .. no way, nu uh, not at all ! !

mo .. we'll just have to pay for camping and food, etc .. there are no access fees .. just another reason to *love* the refuge ..

Thanks for the info, Okieterry. I talked to a ranger on Mt. Scott Saturday and you are sooo right. I wholeheartedly agree with you and climbr_chk, I'm not about to be the one that gets everyone banned from climbing in the refuge. So no night climbing this trip , but watch out the next time I go to Robbers Cave.

We usually night climb at the get together at Quartz Mt. every year. Climbing snakehead in the moonlight is an awesome thing. Then you can rap down a rope we have fixed on the headwall.

For those of you who are wondering if it is too hot right now to climb, it really isn't. I had a fun day yesterday climbing at the quarry in the wee hours of the morning and then zoo wall and the kerplunk area later in the day. It was great in the shade!

Hey okieterry, I was wondering about night climbing at Quartz and started to ask, now I don't have to.
I was at Upper Mt. Scott Saturday, and for the middle of Aug. in Oklahoma, it wasn't bad at all. The Narrows should be even better (most climbs get in the shade sooner) but I didn't have much time nor a belay slave this trip.
I checked with the MP's at the LETRA gate and they keep it open till 9:45pm, if anyone is going to be coming in later than that, they have to go through the main Ft. Sill gate. I didn't think to ask how early they open the gate in the morning, but the area gates in the Refuge don't open until 9:00am anyway.

Hey push, I couldn't find my hacky or my Bop-it either. Finally my wife confessed that she gave away my Bop-it, seems like it got on her nerves (can you imagine ). I haven't replaced the Bop-it yet, but I do now have a new hacky (that's right, climbr_chk, I am the one SAYING that I will bring the hacky)
Don't forget to bring your webbing for the slack-line. I'm soooo ready!! See yall soon.
Edited cuz I cant spel sew gud.

Sorry Amber, I will be bringing my 11 year old daughter, but an 11 year old girl to a 6 year old boy is like SO old. Not only that, she's also a GIRL. Or is he not in that stage yet?
Camhead, (better known as little woosey she-boy), there are lots of easy trad routes that are easy to place pro on, GREAT FUN.
So let's all go CLIMB something!!

When you are all out there in the Wichitas enjoying yourselves. Make sure you try Crazy Alice. A 5.8 trad lead that will turn 5.12 sport climbers into little crying girls that scream "MOMMY!!!!".

"Little Woosey She-boy??!!" Them's fightin' words! I'll lead that shizzit!!!!! Just you wait. Here's one sport climber that loves those easy routes that 'turn sport climbers into blithering idiots' or whatever.

Hey push, do we have a plan as to where we are going to climb or how we are going to meet up, or are we just going to splinter into groups with similar interests and just meet up at LETRA after climbing? Just curious. I'm sure looking forward to meeting some of the people from this site, taking lots of pictures, watching some HARD climbing and even doing some EASY climbing myself.
I'm thinking I'll see if I can get off work Friday and get some flappers started, anyone else planning to be there Friday?

Okieterry,
I am almost positive I am in for the get together in the ta's...I will be accompanied by my neighbor who claims he knows you...his name is Wroyce Johnson, and I was just wondering if you were in for the labor day event still. I know that if you are, and if you remember Wroyce, that he would love to meet up with you and climb...just let me know of your plans and if you are intrested in meeting up

i may head down there friday, as i don't have class that day..

as for the plan, i don't think there really is one yet..i'm sure we'll figure it out. look for a red tracker with a white convertible top at LETRA, that's my car..or maybe look for some poor kid failing miserably at slacklining(flourescent yellow webbing rules!)..

and speaking of LETRA, somebody post directions..

Well push, I've been waiting for someone with a map to post good directions, since I don't know milages nor remember exit and Hwy. numbers, but since it hasn't happened yet, I'll go ahead and post some directions and I'm sure someone will follow with better ones later.
Coming from OKC via I-44 South, go about 90 miles from OKC, and take the first free exit right, the Medicine Park exit (Hwy 49 West) once the turnpike ends. There is a LOVES Country Store and a Burger King there and signs for them on I-44 (so it doesn't catch you by surprize). Take this road West to the town of Medicine Park (a bit more than 5 miles?). Just after you cross over a bridge, with the town appearing on your right, there will be a road on your left (South) with a LETRA sign and a guard post covered with camaflauge netting and with bright orange traffic cones. (If you go up a hill with a water tower on your right, or if you enter the refuge, you have gone too far.) After chatting with the MP's, go south for less than a mile till you come to a Tee, turn right and go West for about a mile to the LETRA (Lake Elmer Thomas Recreational Area) area. As you enter there is a booth where they will want $8.00 for you to enter to swim, tell them you want to camp and they will wave you through and dirrect you to a tan colored building to your right. Go inside and they will get your name, tag number and $3.00 per night per tent and point you to the camping area which is around the south end of the lake, past the swimming area (where you, as a paying camper, are free to swim and use the big water slide). There are no numbered, assigned camping sites, you just set up anywhere in the camping area, but there are some grills, picnic tables and shade trees and these areas will be taken first.
I'm just going by memory and all milages are approximate. If no one posts better directions, I will try to update this with Hwy numbers and milages once I get home to a map. I look forward to seeing yall soon and I sure hope no one gets lost due to my directions. Remember that the guard post closes at 9:45pm, so don't be late.

Hey I would love to hook up with some of you guys (and girls) while I'm there. I've been there about 5 times and climbed on Elk Slab and upper Mt Scott. Would like to go the Narrows. If anyone would like to exchange cell numbers so we can try to meet give me a PM here. We'll be camping the 3days we are there. My wife and 9 and 11yr old girls will tag along. Both girls can climb 5.7 so lets try to meet!!
(thanks for the PM Mo)

Hey Brandon, glad to hear you are coming. My 11 year old daughter will be glad to hear that there will be some others her age climbing. She has climbed 5.7 but greatly prefers 5.6. I never push her, I'm hoping that given the exposure she will come to love climbing on her own terms. She's never climbed with anyone her own age and I'm hoping this trip will encourage her.
We have Brandon from NW Arkansas and cajunclimber from Houston coming,,,anyone else coming a long ways to climb some Oklahoma granite?
One more week,,,woohoo
