Is Thailand a safe place to visit for a white boy like myself? Looks like a great place to visit even if you were not doing any climbing.

While Thailand is going through a bit of civil unrest, most of the time that doesn't effect tourists. In addition to what has been in the news recently with the civil ousting of the current Prime Minister, the Muslim population in the south is pretty unhappy about what it thinks is doing to them. There have been a number of religious issues, but they have yet to make it as far north as Bangkok, or as far west as Phuket or Krabi, which is where most people Climb. I have been to Thailand 4 times in the last few years and in my opinion, if you want to play it as safe as possible just stay away from places that these people may hit, such as the Full Moon Party on Koh Panang. Although, I still reccomend going to the party, especially if you haven't been to it yet. Remember also that the Krabi and Phuket areas were among the hardest hit by the Tsunami, so down near the beach there is still some reconstruction going on.

Thailand is totally safe. The mosquitos (probably the biggest nuisance in Krabi) don't discriminate. :lol:
Just be polite and respectful, keep to yourself, and you'll be fine. I think the only risk you run is over-paying for things coz you will stand out as a "non-local". Just haggle over everything if you think there is room to budge (e.g. taxis, street markets, etc.), you might over pay a bit, but everything is so inexpensive out there, it doesn't really matter. I guess the language can also be daunting, but just smile and say Sawadeekaap (Sawadeekaa, if you're female). If you're headed out there, just read up on local customs do's and don'ts. If anything it will keep you from looking completely ignorant.
