Thinking of heading to Pawtuckaway this coming weekend (4/22/06) and wondering if anyone can comment on the blackfly and mosquito count there at this point in the season? It's been drier than usual in New England this year, but then again Pawtuckaway's boulders are surrounded by water...

Its early in the season and it's only going to get worse...slap on some pants and a long sleeve and start climbing...if you're so inclined or unusually sensitive to the presence of bugs flying around smother yourself in some DEET!!!

the black flies at Lincoln woods came out yesterday... so they are coming.. maybe not quite up north yet but i'd say get out there while you can

dont forget to tie a rock to your ankle so they don't carry you away

Thanks for the replies! I was backpacking down in CT this weekend and the blackflies were out, but not too bad (and not biting!). Here in Maine I've only seen a handful so far this season, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this weekend!

Anyone know the best place to camp when travelling here to climb?

Is the state park the only option?

Thanks,
Dave.

Don't know about other camping options than the state park...but will give this thread a bump for you.

Can give an update on the bugs, which is basically that this past weekend the blackflies were out, but not biting (yet). We lucked out and had a cool, relatively dry, and slightly breezy day. Of course, now it's been raining in the northeast and we're only supposed to get more this week, so DEET should probably be on your list for any trips to Pawtuck' in the next few weeks.

John, did you make it to Pawtuckaway? Never been there. You'll have to be my guide.

Yes indeed, Alan! Aside from some of the little winged bastards finding their way into our eyes, my friends and I had a blast there on Saturday! Practically had the place to ourselves, and sent some great problems on the perfect granite. :D We definitely have to meet up there later this season (post-blackflies)!

I don't know, John ... them lil buggas may be just the key I need to make it up some problems! If you get enough of them on ya, have them flap them lil wings all at once, I may be able to gain a grade or two!

do you think Pawtuckaway would be climbable in the beginning of June or would it be pure bloodletting.

Madness I tell you, madness..
not only the bugs but warm, frictionless slopers. You would be guaranteed a truely miserable experience.

The results are in: the blackflies of southern NH are officially bloodthirsty for the season! Went down to Pawtuckaway yesterday (5/6/06) and got chomped on!

(I think they thought the DEET we had on was wasabi or something)

Sean! You're Alive!! Just kiddin ... We'll do Pawtuckaway for sure. Maybe the three of us can set a weekend to camp there after the gathering. Up until then, my weekends are booked. Down for this?

Agree on the black flies. Was at Rumney yesterday and they were everywhere. I had so many on me that when I reached the crux, started to peal, they all got togeather, flapped their wings and I sent the damn thing. Is this aid?
