Sorry, after not being in the state for many years, I can't help you with competent partners, but you should definitely visit the Daks (along with the Gunks, of course). Try places like Roger's Rock, Poke 'o Moonshine, and Chapel Pond Slab.

You'll probably end up spending all 8 days in the gunks. Plenty to do, tons of variety and a great atmosphere.

What days are you coming? You can post for partners on the "Partners - East Coast" forum and find some people for the various areas you're looking to visit. Though you will definitley get some beginners hoping you'll run rope for them....there are also some good people who pick up partners here. I have had god luck almost every time. You'll want to give an idea of what your abilites are and what you've done, to attract good, competant partners. I also find it helps me when I mention what I am looking for in abilities for my partners, too. PM me if you want more info.

the gunks is great climbing, but it can feel like a gym in the main areas with all the people and posturing. after you hit the gunks just drive a few hours north to the adirondacks. its some great climbing in a very rustic area. when you are not climbing you can go hang out in lake placid. if you can't find anyone to meet before you go, just go climbing at the beers wall. there is usually a group or two climbing there and i've found it pretty easy to find people to climb with.

Couple of other questions: 1. is it worth it to use www.gunks.com top find partners they charge you like $15 for 3 months of use. 2. Recomended routes in the trad 5.10 range, up tp 11-. 3. How long of is it a bus ride to get to the city, i have never been there so I figured I would spend the weekend there, when it gets crowed at the gunks. 4. am I going to have to worry about theft at the campgrounds, seen some info about that, and if anyone has a whats better, the mutli or slime let me know. thanks

Can't really go wrong with the Gunks. And if you're leading .11 trad, you HAVE to climb The Yellow Wall in the Trapps. Obviously, being in Germany, I haven't been there in a couple of years, but you should be able to just jump a train from New Paltz or Poughkipsie (sp.) down to the city in a couple of hours. About a 90-minute drive if you rent a car. Don't know what the weather is like upstate right now, but if you get the chance, hit Wallface in the Daks, too. Very remote and big. Good sh%# :D Partners??? Dunno. Post on the forum on this site, but I would say that you really can't go wrong with gunks.com. Met a few of my partners that way when I was in school in NY. Regards, Edd
