Fit female, mid-thirties. I hike, climb and mountaineer sometimes too much. So why does this happen? Not consistently though. Or is it just me?

This is a good question for a good doctor.

Happens to me too. Vastly annoying. However, I also have an apparently chronically low level of progesterone, so if I don't take BC I will bleed basically non-stop. My OBGyn has two theories: (1) the exercise is causing small tears, hence the spotting of fresh, bright blood. (2) The additional stress on the body caused by an intense workout exacerbates the problem of low progesterone levels, so I start to bleed a bit as if my period was starting. When my body catches up with the workout, things are (relatively) balanced again, and it stops. Oh yes: fit female, mid twenties. I don't think it is theory (1) because this has happened before during workouts that are almost exclusively upper-body.

Yes. Includes upper body work outs, like cragging. I asked my GP many years ago. She said, that's just how my body is. Not too helpful. Thank you. I will try to look into progesterone levels as the culprit. Very little spotting when it occurs, but it has been puzzling. Sometimes on my most strenuous trips, there's nothing! Like I mentioned before - inconsistent.

talk to your doc, yes, but be prepared to tell her/him what *kind* of blood it is...bright and red usually will be tears like was described as above, but darker blood, smelly blood etc... could be bigger trouble.

yeah, i should actually get a family GP again. bright red, implying tears by the earlier theory. but what are the mechanics of that kind of tearing?

I've actually had my period go off-cycle when I've put a huge stress on myself. The "huge stress" has tended to be some multi-day crunch, and it was probably my hormones that went off and brought it on. On most multi-day wall climbs, I will get my period during or immediately after no matter where I am on my cycle. Then I just cycle normally from there, so I haven't worried about it. Once it was brought on by stress in my personal life, and after being annoyed with what felt like the never-ending period (mostly spotting), my doc put me on the pill. After a couple of months, my life and period had stablized, so I went off it, and everything was fine. I'm not saying that this is what's happening to you, but it is probably one of the possiblities.

yes. i can relate to this too - the big events in life & climbing. but in this instance, it is only very light spotting for the day of heavy activity.

Another possibility would be disruption of the corpus luteum. During the normal menstrual cycle, the corpus luteum produces hormones that maintain the lining of the uterus until a fertilized egg implants... if fertilization doesn't occur, the corpus luteum disintegrates and you get your period. Sometimes strenuous activity can disrupt the corpus luteum leading to spotting. It could also be something like fibroids or polyps. Hard to say what's going on though without knowing your medical history/doing physical exam... so to echo everyone else, please go see your doctor.

yoyo, this has happened to me and I am also in my mid-thirties. (Only while exercising) Usually more strenuous is more likely to trigger it. I wondered if I was maybe hitting menopause early because I heard that happens then. Let me know what you find out at the Dr. I am always reluctant to go to the Dr. (I had a bad experience with a crazed dermatologist when I went in for what I thought was a routine skin cancer screening! )

it's happened to me a few times and I'm only 19! I asked my gyno and she said, it's not big deal, it happens from tensing up all of your muscles.
