Just wanted to post a link to this New York Times article on a guided climbing trip at Red Rocks' Oak Creek Canyon. Always interesting to see how folks writing for popular media portray climbing... (which in this particular case is actually done fairly intelligently  ) http://travel2.nytimes.com/.../escapes/05rock.html

That was cool. I wonder what route that was? My guess would be Solar Slab, but I'm too lazy to get out the guide book.

In reply to: That was cool. I wonder what route that was? My guess would be Solar Slab, but I'm too lazy to get out the guide book. The article mentions that the route is 5.9, so unless Solar Slab has gotten alot harder since I last did it, I doubt it.

at 5.9, 13 pitches, and given the black varnish traversing, my first guess is Black orpheus, but that picture doesnt look that familiar....hrm

Can't say for sure - it could be a narrow DOF, with the lower right hand corner being a little shoulder of rock much closer to the photographer than to the climber -ie, they're shooting a 100mm+ lens wide open, and that piece of rock happens to be only a few feet from the photog.

hrm, change of opinion- its likely Solar Slab or Sunflower...with Beulah's as a possible start to the route (assuming the 5.9 rating). The pic is of the base of the last pitch of Solar, which is not often done because the raps start below it... the other clue is the background of the other pic- Black Orpheus doesnt have the wash below it, it has the slabs- but once you get high enough on the Solar Slab wall, the wash becomes the backdrop for any photos.
