I am headed from Iowa City to Backbone S.P. on Tuesday May 9, and was hoping to find somone who knew the area that could meet me there, or ride up from IC with me. I am driving an international student to a school in Elkader, IA for the International Programs. I will leave at 7am on tuesday, and be back in IC around 4:30. With drive time, I should be at Backbone from about 10am to around 2. I am driving a university car, so that means gas is free! (i don't have to pay at least). I am looking to do some bouldering in the park, and I will bring my crash pad. Hopefully someone who knows the area can show me some stuff, otherwise I am just going to hike around the area, searching for some bouldering. -Scott J

Hey, I've been climbing there recently...good luck finding stuff to boulder on, because most of what I saw was climbing routes, not really stellar boulder problems. Try around the actual backbone though, we did most of our climbing on the drive-in.

Thanks for the info. I have never been there so I wasn't sure. Is there anything worth checking out on the way in?

The south gate has a trail that goes along the river...we took a walk down there, since we had rented cabins, and there looked to be some decent bouldering there. Otherwise, most of the climbing is accessable by the east gate. Youll probably have to hike a bit if you want to boulder around the actual backbone, because the backbone trail is the top of it, and I'm not sure exactly where you have to park to get to the bottom of it. If anything, you can take some time traversing some stuff...the drive in area is pretty large, and decent for working on footwork. PM me if you have any other questions.

Check out iowaclimbing.com, they have a message board there and the guys that run it (and the gym) know a lot about bouldering around here.
