Hey.

Ive recently started taking some mates bouldering and i was wondering if you guys could help me make a list of the things that i should teach them.

Not so much the technical but things like respect for the rock and the area.

Cheers
Wax

No CHIPPING the rock
ALWAYS leave the area the way you found it, (or better if there was already rubbish there)
NEVER climb harder than the person teaching!
hehehehe

tell them that they can only do routes that are rated in guidebooks, as all unrated routes are so hard that they are impossible. That would be funny.

tell them not to climb over their heads, not to distract other climbers...
Here's an important one: Don't use too much chalk, never mark holds with chalk, and brush off any excess chalk they leave. This is particularly annoying at stoney point, where all the holds are marked with chalk. Oh yeah, tell them not to climb on sandstone shortly after it rains, as the rock is weak at that time.

i'll think of some more things later.

show then how to actively spot the boulderer. there is definitely an art to good spotting.
on the chalk thing. i think chalk is good but deliberate markin (tick Marking) the crucial holds is wrong

The Access Fund has distilled it down to three simple guidelines:

Pad lightly
Climb invisibly
Leave it natural

I think Elk's last comment about newbies climbing harder than the teacher is funny........It reminded me of my friend Chris and I. I finished my first overhang on my first try and he said, "I hate newbies!" This was because everyone he taught learned so quickly and got really good really fast!

One of the things I respect most about climbers is our respect for nature. I grew up in the backwoods of PA and my father is an avid hunter and nature lover. Our biggest pet peeve is with people who leave garbage, destroy paths, etc. I've always been taught to pack anything out that you pack in, as well as picking up after inconsiderate people.
I would teach your friends this as well as safety. Better safe than sorry. Simple phrase but it speaks volumes.
Climb on.

Teach good technique i.e.:

- Hand holds (open, pinch etc.)
- Body position (its all about the feet)
- climbing calls (watch me, climbing etc. yes even when bouldering)
- Suggest some exercises/work outs to get stronger/more efficient (traversing, laping routes etc.)

Lastly, remember the climber "vibe", i.e. introduce yourself and the newbies to other climbers at the crag... the more folks you meet that climb, the more you might be able to talk into belaying for you down the road.

Don't step on the ropes
Check your knots before climbing,
Check your partner's gear and slings, look for cracks, frayed cables, burnt slings, sheath and core cuts on the rope.
Discuss proper shoe care, don't touch sole with fingers (oil),
Proper rope care (keep it covered, stored out of the sun, avoid oil and battery acid in the trunk, how to clean the rope, etc.
Check your harness,
Proper racking techniques for faster removal and organization
Climbing ethics and manners,
Techniques like don't put finger in bolt hangers, avoid using your knees, don't grab the slings . . . .
Demonstrate proper anchor placements, equal weighting, how to protect against upward and sideway forces.
How to spot and catch a falling climber, both on belay and bouldering
And of course, how to sandbag with a straight face
