Ok everyone I seem to have a major problem. My partner and myself are coming up to City of Rock area on May 25 - June 3rd. We have both climbed at the city but did no know that the forest service now lets you reserve the campsites ahead of time. It used to be on a first come first serve basis. Well we don't have a camp site and all of them are taken for the 10 days we will be in that part of the country. Is there anyone out there that would be willing to share their campsite??? We promised to be quiet and not bother anyone. We will be more than happy to pay for the site. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Jon Barlow

Hey Jon ... the chance that one of us has a campsite reserved for those days are very slim. I'd ask at supertopo or other sites closer to COR for better results. good luck! Alan

Might want to put something about Idaho or City of Rock in the subject line... does a great job of catching the eye of local climbers when it's on the front page.

Camp on National Forest land northwest of the reserve (as soon as you enter from the OAkley side hang a left and pass some pay campsites and keep on driving until you are in National forest) or on BLM land south of the eastern entrance (Almo side) Both free. Or just find a site w/ one car and offer to pay the occupant some $$$ to camp w/ them. The City is one of the easiest "managed" places to crash for free/cheap in my experiance. Don't worry.

Memorial Day weekend tends to be pretty crowded at The City. I don't know the whole scoop, but judging from the new campground map, there are a lot fewer campsites than there used to be. There is an "overflow" campground on private land near Almo. I don't have the #, but if you call The City ranger station at 208-824-5519, they can probably give it to you. It's not the greatest -- pretty much no shade, no potable water -- but it's an option. Good luck.

Have you tried other sites? Sounds like superbum knows the area. Try PMing him for more information. Let us know how the progress is going in one of your bumps.

Thanks for the info. I will call the ranger station and find out. I really don't need that much...just a place to pitch a tent and cook. JB

You have no need to worry. The private "campsite" will definately not be full. It is a huge vacant lot with plenty of space. It's pretty ugly and dry, but you can put a tent out. It is just south of the visitor center in Almo.

In reply to: You have no need to worry. My bet is that when/if it snows this weekend (and its looking kinda likely), you'll have no problemo finding a camping spot... -Brian in SLC

Just FYI I think that a private company took over the campsite management. They did away with (I think) 11 sites. Because they considered them undesirable. My advice meet some rad people and camp with them. If for some reason rad people are hard to find you can always bail and go the the BLM land.
