On this 29th day of May, 53 years ago..

At more than 8,000 meters above sea level, in an environment that could easily kill, and after five hours of intense climbing, a 33-year-old New Zealand beekeeper and his Sherpa partner came upon a rock buttress that blocked the path to their goal. The beekeeper’s name was Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa partner was Tenzing Norgay. The date was 29 May 1953. The mountain was Everest. Undaunted, they found an ice cornice that had broken away, climbed 15 meters, continuing upward until only space remained in every direction. The pair made history.

As great as Hillary’s accomplishment was, his legacy is comprised of much more than footprints on the summit. It is a legacy of service to Nepal: 27 schools, two hospitals and a dozen medical clinics — as well as bridges, airstrips, scholarships and other projects that have improved the Sherpas' lives.

Coincidentally.. my birthday
