FYI, it seems there's a voluntary closure of Area 13 at Clark Canyon due to peregrine falcons nesting. There's a sign in the parking area with more details, but the gist of it is that a nesting pair has made their home somewhere near More Rad Than Trad, the pair's chick died last year, and if it happens again, the voluntary closure could become mandatory.

Thanks for that post. I had a friend down there over the long weekend. He came back reporting the same thing but he didn't tell me what was closed.

Heard from a friend in Crowley a couple hours ago that Area 13 is now officially closed by the Forest Service - I expect that if that's true we should hear more details soon.

Just tried calling Inyo National Forest, and no one at the visitor centers seemed to know where I was speaking of or who may be able to answer the question. White Mountain Station in Bishop referred me to the Mammoth Lakes Station. The Mammoth Lakes Station referred me to the Lee Vining Station, when we discovered that both the White Mountain and Mammoth Lakes Stations have the wrong number for Lee Vining.
I do know who to speak to in Administration, and I'll try to give them a call on Monday. Until then, let's treat the closure as real.

Thanks Chris! Much appreciated.
Might go to ORG instead - but it might be hot there next week...

You might try also posting your question at supertopo or summitpost where one of the locals may have recent info for this year.

You could also call Mammoth Mountaineering, or some of the local guide companies, or ask the national Access Fund office who gave them the original input on Area 13 that is on their website. It would be good to get whatever info you can from climbers and put your best face forward, being proactive, before discussing the issue with random people at the land manager offices.

The summer's over so this is a little pointless, but...
No falcons nested at either Area 13 in Clark Canyon or on the Psycho Killer Wall at Benton Crags this year, although I spotted falcons flying in both vicinities.
My friends in the USFS weren't aware of any nesting in the areas this year either, but re-assured me that it wasn't likely to be due to climber activity nearby. Instead they thought that the birds may have either a) moved to another location nearby or b) died during the winter of another cause, which means the surviving bird found another mate and moved on too.
Either way, we didn't have nesting falcons - kinda sad, but OK too.
My lesson - I'm going to check with my climbing friends before I call the USFS. The climbers will know before the rangers!
