...Emmylou Harris, Iris Dement, Loraine Rawls, etc.

Any fans out there?

It would be neat to see a climbing movie creatively integrate this kind of music, rather than the typical suite of reggae/hiphop/moshpit stuff.

I'm a huge emmylous harris fan..........she's my all time fave. I'm also a fan of lucinda williams.

I got to see Townes Van Zandt in concert years ago. it was at the winnipeg folk festival during an intimate workshop......just townes and his guitar. Simply amazing.

I love Iris dement too!!!!

I almost forgot about John Prine! I spent hours yesterday watching classic live performances by Emmylou, Townes, Earle, Iris, and others on youtube.com (check them out!).

They surely are a dying breed.

I'm wondering if any climbers out there know of younger artists today that you enjoy who are trying to carry on the folk tradition? Please post them and a link to their website if they have one!

I came across Ian Thomas (ianthomasmusic.com; he has free mp3s for download) a few months back and bought his CD. It is superb! Reminiscent of Woody and Ramblin' Jack.

All great. I would add Tom Russell, Dave Alvin, Katy Moffatt, and Guy Clark.

Bob Dylan....more than likely the greatest influence on folk and rock and roll music.

Good...but not the impact of Dylan.

Good...but not the impact of Dylan.

Dylan was ambitious, and I can't deny that he has written good music and performed it well. But I have a soft spot for people who learn the songs of their mentors and adapt them and keep them alive, fulfilled by that alone. Dylan was part of the Woody Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack lineage... but he wanted more. He traded the dusty boots for dark shades and wrote his own songs. But it's worth noting that he borrowed much of his style from Ramblin' Jack in the early days, to the extent that many people would say to Jack, "Hey, you sound like Bobbie Dylan!"
