The search for sue Knott and Karen McNeill has been called off as the odds of survival turn against the pair. www.cbs4denver.com
has the story.

I feel sick over the news that the search has been called off. I know Karen (and briefly met Sue) so this feels personal. They've been on my mind constantly since I heard the news they were late in returning from their climb. For the first time in my life, I am really praying.

I've tried to do my part by sharing the news with as many people and climbers I know in hopes that the good karma and prayers from others will give them the strength they need to keep on. And from what I know of Karen, if anyone can gain strength from the prayers of others, it would be her.

The news doesn't sound definitive, and so many of us still have hope. Is the search called off for good, or is it just being suspended for now but will resume?

What can I do????

Let go. Attend their memorial service, if you can.

If you have never been pinned down in a storm without fuel for a day or more you might feel that this is a cold-hearted thing to say. Maybe it is. But you should also consider the rangers who are conducting the searches, and the fury of storms in the Alaska range. They too have families and friends, and it is unreasonable to ask them to put themselves in harm's way long after the point where a human could be expected to survive. At some point they have to call off the search; if the women's bodies are in a crevasse or an avalanche deposition zone, they won't be found for a long time, perhaps never. The fact is that mountains can be very unforgiving places.

We're all going to die sooner or later. Perhaps now would be a good time to shift the focus to how they lived, and if they do somehow make it back, accept it as a miracle. These were two exceptional women who pushed their own limits and blazed a trail for others. May they rest in peace.

There is an extensive thread on Super Topo including a post from Sue's sister about her memorial ceremony:

I am also saddened by this news. I have climbed with Sue in the past while living in Vail. My heart goes out to Eve (her mom) and the rest of her and Karens family.

There is a life celebration for Sue on Sunday in Vail - please see www.vaildaily.com for info.
