Mountaineering greats Sir Edmund Hillary and Mark Inglis are poised to discuss the vexed question of rescuing climbers in trouble on Mount Everest.
Mountaineer Mark Inglis wants to talk in private to Sir Edmund Hillary about the decision not to help an English climber who lay dying on Mount Everest.
Inglis, who returned home to Hanmer Springs yesterday, said he was disappointed by the debate that had been raging since it was revealed his party walked past David Sharp, who later died, on its way to the summit of Everest 10 days ago.
Hillary this week acknowledged Inglis' "great battle" to reach the summit on his artificial legs, but said people who went to Everest "should take a look at themselves and decide whether or not they are prepared to help anybody who they find in danger".
Inglis told The Press yesterday that he was "really disappointed that so many people commented with no facts".
"It is an extremely difficult situation. I would like to speak to Sir Ed personally because I think that is better than it being played out in the public forum."
Inglis, although upset at the way the debate had started, said he would join the discussion about the commercialisation of Everest.
Despite being singled out for criticism, Inglis said he did not feel picked on or that the debate had overshadowed his achievement.
Inglis said he wanted to put the debate behind him and focus on his recovery.
