I saw a web site a while ago and can't remember were it was. It showed how to tie a knot on a stick so you could clip the first hanging draw on a route. Has anyone else seen this? Anyone know the link? [ This Message was edited by: rat-baby on 2002-08-30 08:46 ]

Use a piece of tape. Attach the draw with the gate held open by the tape and rope already in the bottom biner. Make the tape loose enough to be able to tug and leave the draw. Fin-ag-al the draw in overhead and yank. Better yet. Buy a telescopic golf ball retriever and clip off the funny thing at the end. Purchase and 'Epic' stick clip adapator and -- walla -- semi-professional stick clip. Should be in the bag of tricks of every 'serious' sport and aid climber

I'm talking about if the first draw is already hung, but the rope is not running through it yet, there is a way to tie a knot on a stick so you can put the loop around your bent gate pull the rope and it clips in to the hanging draw. Not stick clipping the draw to the bolt, but stick clipping the rope into the draw.

Sorry for the confusion - I don't know a fancy knot for that, though I have rodeo'd a flake into the draw before. Just a good toss of a loop. Better yet, a piece of tape on a stick. I know it's not original, but it will work.

Ya, I'm good with the rodeo style, but some first draws are way the hell up there. I don't know if the tape on a stick thing would work though. Your stick clip with the tape on the biner can be simplified too. Just cram the stick into the gap in the draw between the straight gate and the webbing. Don't have to waste tape that way.

On my stick clip I have a clamp that holds my draw when clipping the bolt. When the draw is already hung all I do is make a loop in the rope, just big enough to go around the bottom biner put a twist in the rope and loop it around the biner, pull on one end of the rope and as the loop get smaller it will open the gate and clip in. It takes some practice to do. If the draw is hanging against the rock it is easier to clip. draws that are free hanging are harder but not impossible. Hope this helps

have you tried putting the rope threw the gate before you put it up there. Not while its still on your harness but after you put on the tape. I think the tape will hold this extra weight most of the time if not, try using a wider strand of tape.

Sorry. I figured out how to tie the knot and was trying to paste in a sketch of how to do it, but failed.

I have had trouble with the carabiner coming off the stick clip from the weight of the rope, especially when the clip can't be done straight up. What I have done is to use the loop of velcro that secures the clip to the pole to LOOSLY secure the biner to the clip. You have to tug awful hard to get it off, but it works. I want to rig up a seperaqte, less stong velcro loop for this purpose. I just need to buy some velcro and try it. I doubt that's what you were asking about, but it might come in handy to know.
