When you get to jamestown, make a left right past the gas station (chevron?) onto Rawhide road.

When rawhide makes a 90 degree bend to the right, turn left onto Shell rd.

Follow shell road a bit, over some cattle grates, until it ends at a closed fence, leading onto a dirt road. Open the fence, drive through, AND CLOSE IT BEHIND YOU, so the horses don't get out.

drive 1.5 miles till you get to another fence. same procedure here with the fences. you are now in the parking area.

At the far end of the parking area, the road continues past a white gate. Hike past it, about 1/3 of a mile (?) until you see a wide dirt ramp and trail leading up to the left. Go up this trail to the grotto.

Please note that the dirt road between the two gates is private property. You MUST remain on the road, and you MUST close the gates so the horses in there don't get out. Also, the dirt road is rough, but low clearance vehicles can make it through if you are careful. More info at www.sonorapassclimbing.com. Have fun, and try not to melt out there!

Also, check out the guidebook, available in town. Sonora Pass Climbing.

I had heard a new guide book for Sonora was coming out. Is this the new one or is this still the old one? Any way to pick this up without going to Sonora itself (is it available in Sacramento)? Where in Sonora?

Thanks.

Well, I ran into Brad Young (guide author) at the grotto a couple months back and asked him the same question.

What he told me is that he is finishing up the new pinnacles guide, and that as soon as he is finished he is going to get going on the new Sonora guide. He said he had route info for several hundred new routes that aren't in the current guide.

BUT, he made it sound like it would be at least 2 years or so before we see the new SPH guide. And I'm afraid I don't know where to get the current version without going to Sonora. Maybe contact the shop there and see if they can mail it to you?

EDIT: I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the shop offhand, I'll look at the guide tonight and try to find it. I think it's on the main street in sonora.

wow, a new guide already? the last one came out in like 2002 I think.

2 years sounds about right. Fun area, less crowded than other granite areas.

I think the name of the store in Sonora is like... SNAC which stand for Sierra Nevada ... something something. Can't remember. OH, Adventure Company! There you go!
Sierra Nevada Adventure Company

What's up caughtinside? Hey, if you have contact infor for Brad Young, email it to me, I have some fa info for him.

Another guide for Pinnacles? What for? Went there sunday (hot as hell) thre's a new route left of foreplay...the most amazing waste of bolts on choss I ever climbed. Beware the last 2 bolts ane on really shitty rock and the second from last is at an angle and sticking out a bit. Not worth it.

Sonora including Jailhouse and Gold wall?

RAGH! I miss Rome's limestone!

Definitely not the house, and most likely not the G wall either. Private property.

Isn't it a Valero gas station?
Well....at least it was when I lived there.

Yes, Valero. And there is a new traffic light there (with a turn lane and signal for the left onto Rawhide), courtesy of the many fatal accidents at that intersection over the years.

Cheers

Um, I think it's a Tesoro station, but I could be wrong on that.

The locals call it the "Whistle Stop" for reasons that escape me.
