The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports that permits can be bought for ascent to the crater rim. The mountain has been closed since it's last eruption in 2004.

I've been to the rim. The ascent is some number of hours on a trail that steepens into something close to a kind of boot trail one might follow up to a climbing crag but ends at the rim before any climbing can be had. Still, it is a worth a look inside if in the area and if the weather is good. Hmmm, might check out some of those lines on the new dome that are begging for a first ascent as indicated in another thread somewhere. Bill L Edit: Here's a link to a current picture of St.Helens. The "route" up to the rim is on the opposite side. Looks like a good day to be up there a the moment.

I was just up at Johnston visitor center last week, and at that point it was still a 5 mile distance that was closed off. I did get to see c=some cool little eruptions though..
