Mountaineering routes? I don't know. Sport routes? Yes. Rockfax.com has an outstanding guidebook for the area, Islands In The Sky: Las Vegas and Great Basin Limestone. -Jay

As far as mountaineering routes go - there aren't many routes at Charleston that have been documented (the Vegas Hose Monster is the ice climb that forms up the water streak which becomes When Angels Cry 5.12 once it dries out). In fact we're mostly a somewhat weather-driven bunch of climbers here in Vegas. We tend to seek the t-shirt & shorts-type weather year round so...... However this has little to do with the possibilities or potential of mountaineering up on the hill so if you're into FA's and have a well-trained eye for a new line, then Charleston could be ripe for the picking! You can see an example of what I'm writing about if you click on this URL http://members.fortunecity.com/buoux/202-02~6.jpg The long cliff line on the left side of the photo is the IceHouse documented in Mick Ryan's "Islands In The Sky" guide of Vegas limestone (for an approach reference). The base altitude, just to the right of the point where the avalanche gulley splits the cliff is 10,000 feet (for the Alpine reference) and it faces North. Happy Hunting! By the way - these photos were taken in April 2002, a very dry year.
