Hi everyone, I had ankle surgery last week after years of rolling and popping it. The MD did a complete reconstruction of 2 ligaments and 2 tendons in my right foot. Im in a aircast for 6 weeks and will be doing physio for another 8 weeks. Ahh thank you Canadian Medicare! Its been 1 week already and I can start putting some weight on the foot again but I wanna be carefull getting back on rock and plastic, no need to speed things and bust it up again. Has anyone undergone this kind of surgery? What is the real recovery time to getting back on the rock.

Bummer on the reconstruction. I might be able to give a semi-accurate estimation. I've worked in sports medicine and physical therapy for several years and through my 'experience' I have tended to folks with similar conditions. I'm assuming the lateral ligaments and tendons saw the knife as they're the most common to be injured in rolling sprains. The amount of time you have to wait for the post-op swelling to go down, the time for initial PT and physio not to mention the time it'll take to regain the mental confidence needed to even rope up after surgery; you're looking at around 3-4 months. However you take this estimation, be it long or short, it's always best to error on the side of caution and wait a little longer--get a little stronger. Make sure you regain most if not full range of motion before trying technical climbs and remember to ice ice ice. I hope this helps out a little. Safe recovery. ac

Not a reconstruction as you had done, but a couple of years ago I peeled of from a highball and landed on a combination of the crash pad and a boulder. My ankle popped and I knew it was broke. Went to the docs and he had to place a pin to support my ankle. Was in an air cast for about a month and slowly worked it back into shape. Couldn't afford physical therapy. I can't say that I can fully understand your situation, but I can say I have a real good idea as to what you are going through. Though I hope you'll do well, it does seem like a long time before I did any climbing ... about 6 months. Good luck and stick with it.

Hi there, My op may be similar to your, except for the ligaments. I had a Brostrom procedure on my left ankle 3 years ago and then on my right one last week. The problem was serious ankle instability following serious sprains and involved ligament reconstruction. The pattern seems to be 2 weeks in a non-weight-bearing cast followed by 4 weeks in a weight-bearing cast, followed by physio and a fairly swift return to normal. I was so pleased with the op 3 years ago that I had no hesitation having the other ankle done following a nastly slip on ice then horrid instability. Three years ago, I found that I could walk on a treadmill fairly soon after the cast came off, followed by building up to short perioed of jogging. I did a 10k within 4 months and I've not had any problems since. The swelling lasted quite a while and you'll need to be careful not to push things too quickly. That sais, I'm booked on a climbing trip to Mallorca in Spain at the end of October, although I expect to have to use a Malleoloc or similar to avoid any damage. Hope it goes well for you. Judith

Thanks for your advice evryone! Its been a little more than 2 weeks since the oprtaion and I can start putting weight on the cast now. The swelling came down a bit but its wayyyyy too early to get a feel for any strenght. Based on the Dr.'s timeline I should try to get back into climbing come november pending some wobbleboard and swiss ball workouts. Thanks again . Judith: enjoy your Spain climbing trip!!! I hope my recovery will go as smooth as yours. Good luck and enjoy! R
