We were driving through Nevada on our way to the Teton’s and needed a place to camp. Being the good road trippers we are we had Tim Toula's "Rock and Road" handy and quickly cross referenced it with our current location (middle of nowhere Nevada); just ahead "Lamoille Canyon" and camping at Thomas Canyon campsite 7 miles up the canyon.

It was well past 10pm by the time we got to Elko (we had stopped in Tahoe on the way :) ) and there was nary a moon in the sky. Driving up the canyon one could feel the rock walls looming overhead. The 7 miles heading up the canyon seemed to take an eternity. But with the determination of my co-pilot and partner we finally arrived in the campground just before 11pm. Grabbed the fee envelope and quickly choose from on of the many available campsites.

First, the campsites are awesome. Spacious tent pad, tons of privacy, grill, fire pit, clean loo’s, 4- stars and the tent isn't even pitched yet. That situation is quickly corrected and trickling creek in the distance has us lulled to sleep in no time.

Morning.....
Ummmm.... where are we? Have we been kidnapped and drug to some far away land? quick check for duck tape and blind folds... nothing... car is still in the same spot i put it... focus... rubs eyes... .... focus again... rub eyes again.... .... the visions of massive, steep, tall, rock walls do not leave.

Deep breath.... wow...

Aspen trees, decent sized stream, how on earth did this place get here, I mean are still in the middle of the eastern Nevada desert, right?

After walking around the campground, which has subsequently been upgraded to 5-stars, we found a trail that follows on the streams that flows through the campground. Up trail, more, huge, steep walls await.

We hiked and took tons of pictures. Unfortunately we were on a time line and needed to get back on the road, the Teton were waiting.

I will post the pictures after i figure out what the heck I was taking pictures of. This place looks very cool. The current pictures just don't do it justice.

there are a lot of basin ranges in nevada like that - lamoille canyon and the rubies are just the easiest to get to. unfortunately the rock isn't wonderful there, but some of it is really good and more could be better with clenaing and traffic.

Pretty amazing huh? Not many people think there's much in Nevada (or Utah for that matter), but there are places like that all over the state! Drop a line if you're driving through again- if you have time for a detour I have a fantastic spot to suggest not far (about an hour or so) out of your way (from Lamoille I mean)! It will blow your mind!
