A long time Gunks local, Bill Ravitch died in the New on 9-10/11 aparently in a rappeling accident. He was found on tues. at the base with the rope through rappeling anchors and the belay devise attached to his harness. Apparently he slipped while getting ready to rappel. He was a very accomplished climber with many years experience and regularly soloed things I couldnt do on top rope. I was looking forward to seeing him again. This is very sad.

More proof that this is more than just a sport. It can be your life and it can take your life. A sad day for all of us, then. AW

A sad story indeed. A very simply way to prevent this kind of accident from occuring is to pull up 10 or 15 feet of rope, then tie a overhand knot. Then begin your rap. Keep a close eye on the knot so you will be ready to untie it when you get to it. You don't have to make the knot tight. I can easily untie it with one hand. You may still fall, but you won't go to the deck! Condolences to his family and friends. r.f

Truly the loss of such a climber and friend is great indeed. My sincere condolences. Rapping is where more accidents happen than in any other aspect of our sport. Please take care everyone!

Camboy, the person did not rapell off the rope, they had fallen from the edge before getting on the rope.

I'm sorry about your loss, but no one is exent from an accident thre are a lot of circumstances that we can't contol, sometimes even ourselves, even a knot a the end of the rope can't help ypu if it reaches the ground. A frien of mine has an accident and broke his ankles and hurted a spinal disk, he fortunately is still climbing. Recently I recived an email signature that goes like this "Learn from your errors.... if you survive", it hard but true.
