I have been climbing indoors for about 4 months now and have been backpacking all my life. Although, I have always wanted to climb mountains. I was wondering what is a good way to get started and what are some good ways to train on flat ground while I am waiting. Alex

Although expensive I would take two or three courses through a well know guide service like the Colorado Mountain School starting with the 5 day basic mountaineering course. There are many other guide services out there, so do a search to see which one offers what you want. As far as what you can do now, you can start getting into better shape by hiking steep trails and adding more weight to your backpack as your strenth and stamina improve. If you have access to a stair step machine start using it when you don't have the time to hike.

Sorry you are lacking the heights. Gaining some technical experience rock climbing can help, but mountaineering is really a game of experience. A good place to begin learning about it is by reading 'Freedom of the Hills' by the Mountaineers. This is a good source of tons of information - yet there view can be a little conservative. If you read Mark Twight's book 'Extreme Alpinism, Climb Light Fash and High' you'll get the other side of the coin. Good Luck. -Jesse
