Alert Kidnapped Rockclimbers At Big Rock, Perris, California

I'VE POSTED THIS AGAIN WITH MORE DETAILS...AS I REALLY DO WANT TO MAKE SURE ALL CLIMBERS GET THIS INFORMATION...AND DON'T WANT ANYONE TO GET HURT OR KILLED.

On Wednesday afternoon (11TH OCT 2006 ) I met my friend Bill and we decided to spend the afternoon at a local southern California location called “Big Rock” near Perris, California.

We are above the Lake Perris park and lake and I’m eager to get to the top of the “Big Rock” to admire the view across the desert valley floor, Bill is following me but decides to rappel down as he saw a lone figure at the base of the rock and is concerned about our belongings being “ripped off”.

It takes much longer to reach the top than I had planned so I follow shortly and rappel down to Bill. I ask him who the lone person was, and we decide that he looks most probably like a disheveled Mexican illegal, and as its hot we decide to give him our Gatorade drink and a few dollars.
(Man was hispanic 5ft8-10" dark hair, brown eyes 170-190lbs)
He, walks towards us slowly, then suddenly without warning pulls out a silver 9mm semi automatic and points the cocked and loaded gun at us.

The rest is history...I was held hostage at gunpoint in the and my friend was forced to take money out of the bank.
Luckily we survived.

Glad you are OK. That is really sketchy. How close to the border is Big Rock? Scary stuff.

When I was living in AZ I remember the large signs put up by the forest service in areas I went hiking that warned you about drug runners and the Coyotes (smugglers who brought people in and dumped them in the middle of the desert).

Wow, I have a hard time imagining getting held at gun point while out climbing. How busy was the are you were climbing at? Was there anyone else around?

This is not really surprising. Big Rock is not a wilderness area. It's a lake surrounded by city (read sewer). I haven't climbed there in years and have no reason to return, especialy after reading this. Glad you guys are ok.

depends... some of those kung fu boys really are fast as lightning.

for instance, a friend has been practicing WingTsun Kung Fu for close to 10 years, and his instructor for more than 20. I recently saw a video of a demonstration they gave and they are both pretty damn fast. If the guy with the gun is too far away, you're pretty much SOL. Hell I'd probably be SOL anyway, but these guys were fucking fast.

Not all Latinos are Mexicans (from someone who is constantly called Chinese for being Asian)

Not all disheveled people are "illegals"

I am so sorry you got mugged. But no need to start discriminating.

What the F@#***k kind of question is " How close are you from the border" If it were a black man would you be asking how close is big rock from Africa??? Even more so that the incident took place in So Cal, which has a healthy population of Latinos from across the Americas.

I might be making certain conclusions myself....and if so , then I apologize in advance. It is just that historically minorities have always been singled out as a distraction , during times of social or economic dishevel. More so during times of war. When you asked that question , what were you thinking??? Just out of curiosity, Help me understand. If I have read to much between the lines , then once again I apologizes in advance, One has to realize how alarming such statements are in these times . Thanks Topramen

Did I miss the part where someone got kidnapped?

Glad you're ok, and that you're not a boulderer... who knows what he may have done when he found out you had absolutely nothing of value.

edit: My appologies, apparantly I can't read, and I did miss the part about the kidnapping. First time through I thought they just took you for whatever money and valuables you had on you (yes I thought it was odd to take money climbing). Just noticed your friend had to go to the bank and withdraw money. Wow... that's unreal. Again, glad you're ok.

"How'd you know it was loaded?"
Simple: there's no such thing as an unloaded gun.
And I didn't pick up on the discrimination as much as others. My takeaway was that you tried to help a guy and he pulled a gun on you.

I am so sorry you got mugged. But no need to start discriminating.

He didn't say "we decided that he looked like a disheveled Latino, so he must be an illegal Mexican." He said he looked like a disheveled Mexican illegal. If I say someone looks like an "excited Japanese businessman" I am not implying that everyone that is excited is a businessman or that all Asian people are Japanese.

Nor did he imply in his post that they thought he was a "disheveled Mexican illegal" because he mugged them, but that they came to that conclusion before anything happened, when they had decided to help him; you only inferred that's what he thought from his post, meaning the discrimination is coming from you.

Don't cry discrimination when there is no evidence of such.

I'm glad you're okay flygiles, and thanks for posting.

When you are kidnapped by armed gunmen while climbing, you are supposed to wait for the right opportunity, and then push the kidnapper off a cliff. You will never become an internationally known 5.14 climber until you master this technique.

Yet another example of why I'm glad I left the Riverside area.

As if getting couches trundled on me at the Quarry wasn't enough.

I call "bullshit" on this post.

Lake Perris is a shithole but for someone walk out to Big Rock and then mug a climber(s) when there are plenty of boaters and tourist hanging around the other side of the park - bullshit troll post...or prove it with the police report.

has this been corroborated?

for instance, it seems local reporters eat this kind of stuff up - "Climbers held hostage!"

if this really happened, then i'm sorry that you had endure that type of experience. on the other hand, if this is a troll (clues: racism, low post count, no replies), then this is just tasteless. i hope i'm wrong.

jcasper, are you telling me that you can tell a person is Mexican based purely on his looks? Can you tell an "illegal" person by his looks? I always wonder about people who get so defensive when racial insensitivity is pointed out. Now, if this gunman had said, "I am a Mexican immigrant without papers, and would you please hand over some money..." I would say that post wasn't racist.

On the other hand, I agree this smells of troll....

If an illegal immigrant (fresh from the border) could say all this in English.....I think he would have been working somewhere instead.

PLEASE stick to the information good people...I posted this article with the intent to keep other rock-climbers safe and alive, I have no desire to discuss discrimination or any other politics on a website designed for rock-climbing; No offence was intended to anyone.
With regards to alpinismo_flujo's commenton calling my post "s--t", you are mistaken, this event really DID happen. It would be sad for you to call S--t on my story and then someone ignore my warnings and get hurt.
This is no "troll" It is the first time I've ever posted and I decided to do so to inform everyone.
There will be a police report filed (Perris valley police Wed 11th)if anyone wants to see this to verify the validity of the story(and I urge alpinismo_flujo to do exactly this) PLEASE do contact them (if you need more info to give them the incident finished some hours later betweeen Mapes and A street). And after contacting the police PLEASE post to verify my story.

Kind regards
GF

I believe him. The ever present broken glass by the side of the road is witness to numerous car break ins. I have only been there once in the last decade, nothing left to do, but there was a Aura about and a stolen jacket even on a weekend.

That picnic ground would be an inviting place for a wetback criminal type to camp out waiting for prey.

40-60% of all felony arrests in Southern California are wetbacks. Your assessment of his origin and ethnicity is for sure statistically probable and since you were a close up and personal witness for an extended forced time, I'd have to say definitive.

Look out for Rubidoux too. Carry a #10 hex for bouldering when the gang cycle is peaking, (about a seven year periodicity) I have no idea where in the cockroach cycle we are now, I never go there any more.

The term wetback used solely to inflame the PC crowd and other leftist weenies
