Hello all, I have some questions regarding an Ice Climbing Roadtrip to the Canmore area in January/February... I am wondering if anyone knows anywhere in the areas of Canmore or Banff that you can throw up a tent for free, or at least sleep in the back of the truck wihout being hassled by police or park authorities? We wil be there for approx. 4 or 5 weeks and don't really feel like paying to camp the whole time... Anyone have any ideas? Thanks For Your Time, Ryan Feel free to PM me with suggestions... Thanks again...

There is no free camping in Banff National park. You will not only get "hassled" by the wardens, but they will hit you with fines aswell. If you do camp illegaly, don't make a fire, the locals will most likely call the wardens on you and you'll end up in court. It just happened to a couple from Quebec a couple weeks ago. F'n morons were breaking small trees down and had a fire going. It's a national park for fuck sakes. Anyways, just wanted to warn you about that. You can probably find places to crash out down the Spray Lakes road south of Canmore. Find your way to the Grassi lakes rock climbing (directions in sport climbs book) area and follow that road until you find a spot. Lots of ice down that way aswell.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it... Is this Spray Roads Area "legal" camping or just more likely not to be hassled there? Just curious... Thanks again for the info... I will check it out....

dont even try it in the parks, unless u do it right in town and sneak in and out of your truck. in canmore there are more places i would try in the industrial part of canmore(just to sleep) as well as east of town on either highway at the pullouts as theres not much happening there in winter. spray lakes would work too i think, just a hassle to drive up that road everyday, but i would only have a fire up there, that would be the only place to really camp. lived there for a summer in a little rv just moving around so i know dealio,

In reply to: Right on... I appreciate all the info... Just curious how long is the drive from Canmore and Banff to the Spray lakes Road Area? From Canmore it takes about 5 minutes to get onto the start of the Spray lakes road and from Banff about 25 minutes.

Car camping on an ice climbing trip? Noble, good luck with that. You can also stay for cheap at the Alpine Club of Canada clubhouse (I think $25 a night each) - as well as the hostel at Lake Louise or Banff. Or bring one rope for each day - you won't be drying your gear out while car camping. B

Hello, thanks for all the replys... Yeah I know that the gear drying issue is something to be considered. I have already thought about it and I am thinking of possibly doing like a day or two camping then a night in the hostel, or something along those lines... As far as the cold, well, yeah it's a bummer, but I'll be honest... We're from Alaska and up here a lot of the ice doesn't have real convenient lodging, so we usually just try to get by any way we can... Especially when we're trying to save money... None the less, thanks again for all the tips.. I do appreciate it... Ryan
