I was looking in the Routes section on this site and there is a crag called Kitt Peak. I'm not sure if it is known by another name.

There might be something there, but I do not know anyone who has climbed there. It might even be a problem since it is on the reservation. But I can not think why you would want to climb there when you have 3000 routes on Mt. Lemmon and another 2500 in the Cochise Stronghold. Kitt Peak is way out there and you would have to find them on your own.

I am planning a week long trip, so I am just trying to get a handle on whats all out there. I am going to Mt. Lemmon, I just didn't know if I could climb there for a week.

Unless you can knock off a couple hundred pitches a day, I think you can keep yourself busy for a week. The best I have heard of was a friend did 58 in a day once.

There are some routes in the Kitt Peak area though most are not published. If any are published they would be in Bob Kerry's "Backcountry Climbing in Southern Arizona" which is out of print and impossible to find. I understand that you don't want to spend a full week at Mt. Lemmon. I would highly recommend Cochise Stronghold over trying to find routes at Kitt Peak. The stronghold is legendary in many ways and has stellar routes. Great free camping too. You'll find enough route beta to get by in the Falcon Arizona guide. The stronghold is mostly multipitch routes. Bring plenty of long slings to sling chickenheads. Have fun

There are 16 routes listed in the Second Edition of "Backcountry Rockclimbing in Southern Arizona", by Bob Kerry. That printing was from 1997.The first edition was from 1991 and also includes Kitt Peak. According to the book climbing may or may not be allowed there. Truthfully, there are probably a lot better places to spend your time.

Back in the day they had all sorts of random guide books.

I guess I have a habit of snatching up guidebooks when ever I find one for an area I want to climb at when I see it. My new copy is hardly used. Actually neither copy is very used. The first one has some water damage from my damn sister before I ever even got to use it. What is the old one worth to you?

In reply to: I am planning a week long trip, so I am just trying to get a handle on whats all out there. I am going to Mt. Lemmon, I just didn't know if I could climb there for a week. I don't know. You may well get tired of Lemmon before a week is up. I admit I never was a Lemmon-phile (sporty granitic slab, incipient crack systems and charred manzanita get me cranky in a short amount of time- but to each his own). But the Windy Point formations are really cool to look at, especially the really lichen-y ones. Oh, and the summit pie shop is divine. Lemmon doesn't *suck* but you really shouldn't limit yourself. Now is a splendid time of year for SoAZ climbing. Cochise, Lemmon, Milagrosa, the Dry, Gates Pass, Babo, the Catalinas in general, all areas great, small, and hideously chossy; backcountry and mellow- at least there's variety. So with that in mind, DON'T limit yourself to Lemmon! At LEAST hit up Milagrosa, which is very close to Lemmon and offers sweet 5.10-5.11 crimping on golden gneiss. I kinda sorta think that crag is genius, and I actually miss it AND the hike in. (but it's a rooooough life in Flagstaff) Oh, and I have a copy of the Kerry backcountry book and the Tucson sport and bouldering guides, all v. difficult to find. If you ask extry-nice, I would be happy to scan you some key passages, you know, for limited, personal, non-commercial use and all 8-)

Ok, Cochise Stronghold and Lemmon should do. If we get bored we can go up to Queen's Creek or Jacks if we are up for the drive. Thanks for all the info, it is very helpful.

Mendoza canyon is what you are looking for, located very close to kitts peak. Great climbing a friend went down last weekend to do the elephant dome a 600 foot 5.5 goes up the trunk of the elephant. Also a few multi pitch sport routes. Great area still cloudy on exact location.

I've climbed at Kitt Peak...There are a couple of dozen routes there. They are documented in the old under-the-counter Summit Hut guidebook.
