Hi there, I'm considering moving for a job to Raleigh, NC and I'm a little worried about the climbing situation. What are the areas within driving distance (less than 2.5 hours)? We're looking for any type of climbing in the 5.8-5.11 range. Any help would be appreciated!

If you are moving to NC, you are in luck. There is TONS of rock in that state! No need to be worried at all. 2.5 hours from Raleigh- Pilot Mountain, Sauratown Mountain, Stone Mountain, all different types of rock climbing (TR, sport, scarey slab). Also, the New is only a couple hours away with thousands of rock climbs! Welcome to NC! I lived and climbed there a couple years (til I moved to TN).

That's really good to hear. :-) I'm going there in early December and I'm much more enthused... I was getting worried when RC.com listed (0) areas in eastern NC, but I guess central is as close as all the areas around Atlanta (where I am now). No prob!

Moore's Wall is also within 2.5hrs of Raleigh. The Boone area with tons of bouldering and Ship Rock is just over your 2.5hr limit at around 3hrs. Asheville area is a little further with about a 4hr drive to Looking Glass, Linville Gorge, Rumbling Bald around there. Oh...and Crowders Mtn is probably right at 2.5hrs down the road. And as said the New is easy to reach in about 4-4.5hrs.

A few good areas within an easy day trip (2.5 hours or less) and lots of great areas if you expand out to 4-5 hours. I find myself getting sick of the same few areas when taking lots of one day trips, but if you throw some extended stays in there it really opens up a lot, including some real world class crags like New River and Laurel Knob.
