Pakistan president signs amendment to rape statute, despite nationwide protests by islamic conservatives.

“I call on all people to prevent Musharraf and his team from wrecking Muslim society,” Ahmed told nearly 1,000 demonstrators in Rawalpindi. He said the new law would only fuel public anger against Musharraf's ruling party ahead of national assembly elections next year.

The amendment in question allows judges to choose whether to try a rape case in a criminal or sharia court. Previously the only choice was the sharia law, which included a requirement for four male witnesses to testify before somebody could be convicted of rape - one of the most batshit insane rules I've heard in a long, long, long time.

i was actually WTF when i read that one.

not because they dont need witnesses anymore, but because the poor victims needed no less than 4. man, that was really f*cked up. but, then again, most religious legislation is.
