In case you haven't seen this yet, there has been an amazing rescue on Mt Vinson in Antartica. http://www.mounteverest.net/news.php?news=15351 Glad to hear that everyone is going to be ok. I've got a friend that is on his way to Mt Vinson and has been stuck in Chile awaiting better weather to make the flight to Antartica. He's been affected by the same bad weather that affected the current teams on Mt Vinson.

I'm Kind of astounded that these guys, guiding clients on one of the more serious mountaineering routes on the planet, did not have a stove with them. I'm not an antarctic alpinist, but at least on the lowly Denali, which I've been on plenty, carrying a stove, a sleeping bag, a shovel and a Bivy sak on summit attempts is standard protocol. Shite happens, and you'd better be ready for it when it comes knocking at your door. I also wonder what the prospects of these companies will be in terms of future permits....If I recall, permits for Americans climbing in antarctica requires a stamp from the US national science foundation, and THOSE guys don't like people yayhooing around and getting into trouble down there doing things like going on summit attempts without a stove etc.....

Man, not only was the JG guide unprepared, the article makes it sound as though he kind of lost his shit when things got rough, too. I can't imagine being a client stuck in that tent with the guide, the guy you expect to be able to handle himself, weeping into the sat phone. I'm not saying I'd handle myself any better mind you, but I don't take other people's money under the pretense of professionalism either!
