A friend and I are considering a trip to Looking Glass next month; I've got The Nose on my list. Anybody have an opinion about whether it's too cold to climb there in January? JL

It certainly isn't impossible to find good weather there in January, but you'd up your odds with a Rumbling Bald back-up plan. If you do head LG way, FYI, the sun doesn't hit the Nose until around noon.

pending the weather, which varies, it could be prime. if it's during the week, won't matter anyhow, no crowds. start when you want. climb in the sun if you wish (like j said, no sun until later). a good alternative is sundial crack, same grade, same place. south side climbs are in the sun, if it's not raining. it is a rainforest here in brevard, technically.

Thanks guys! This'll be my first trip to LG; Rumbling Bald sounds like a good fallback. Jay -- when you coming down to climb at Tallulah? JL

We climbed there Dec 26-28 2006. The sun does not hit Sundial until nearly 1:00. The shade had ice from the previous days rain but Nose and Sundial were dry. No other climbers were in the nose area on Dec. 27. South side gets sun by 10:00 on. |
