Cam Lobe Damage

This past weekend I scored some pretty schweet booty: a #3 BD C4. Problem is, it was stubborn and we had to "coax" it out with about 20 minutes of pulling, wiggling, and some not so subtle use of a nut tool. Everything is ok except the nut tool seems to have left a noticeable gouge along the inner edge of one of the lobes (see pictures).

I was wondering if you guys would look at it and give me your opinions as to what effects such damage could cause to the cam lobe.

I understand that the use of this cam ultimately relies upon a question of trust. I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can in order to make an educated decision as to whether or not to trust this thing.

Thanks

I tapped a #4 out of a crack with a hammer last year. Then I rebuilt the trigger (it was busted) with wood. I whip on it all the time.

I wouldn't hesitate to use that cam there. Good booty feels good eh?

That "gouge" doesn't look structurally significant to me, but if you don't trust it, try and get in touch with BD, i'd bet they'd at least test it for you. You might not want to tell them you didn't buy it, but still it is their product.

It's fine.

I would take a file and take that burr off though. Wouldn't want it snagging slings or clothing or whatever. Congrats on your new cam!

A friend suggested removing the burr, too. Glad someone brought that up actually. That small burr rubs along the axle housing and actually keeps the cam from fully retracting (and returning) when you pull the trigger. That's easily addressed by just pulling on the trigger harder or tapping it with a finger, but removing it with a file will make the action much smoother.

Thanks for the comments thus far guys!

if that were reason not to use the cam Id have to retire all 25+ of mine. I think your fine here - more than fine, you bootied a nice cam. Nothing like getting an alien or BD 1 2, or 3 (e.g. something you'll really use). Of the three cams Ive bootied in my lifetime they are all theoretically nice to have, but never used (offbrand, 4th deep on sizes I already have etc). Actually I wonder why the hell I keep them!

I wouldn't be concerned about the burr.

I couldn't really tell on my monitor though... was that yellow paint at the end of the axles?

If it's just paint, that thing is bomber, rack it up.

I'd file the burr off, and also see if you can wipe the rust off the end plates and slide the axles side to side to inspect them for more rust. Then I'd clean the entire head of the cam as much as possible, and lightly lube it to protect against further rusting.

If it is in fact rust, like I think it is.

The only thing i'd be concerned about is the formation of a stress concentration at that sharp corner. Probably not a big deal, but I'd try and grind a little bit around the sharp point and try and smooth it out. On the other hand, there is a lot of beef there, so you're probably ok either way.

You definitely want to file that off - it's a bit more than a burr, and I could see it nicking your slings. Aside from that - nice score!

Thats my cam. I left it there for the pink-point. Please return it to where you found it so it will be there next year when I return to make that clean ascent.

Ok I filed and smoothed out the burr. The lobe doesn't stick on the axle housing anymore. The cam retracts nice and smooth just like it should. There was some surface rust on the tips of the axles but I easily removed that with some fine grit emery cloth. Not really worried about the rust as it appeared to be all superficial and didn't appear to penetrate.

Thanks for all the advice, guys!
