That's pretty interesting bonger. Bet they're only just getting started (with the provocative evolutionary discoveries). Thanks for posting it. DMT

"Guess what? We were wrong about evolution before! But now we're RIGHT!" "But you said you were right last time, when you were wrong!" "Don't ask questions when we're right! We're always right! Even when we're wrong!" Uh.... yeah. Scientists get it wrong again... like that's unusual. Stirring stuff.

Small world peculiarity: Nicholas Wade (the science writer for the nytimes who is big on these new sorts of arguments that try to nail down evolutionary details based on genetic evidence) is a cousin to a professor (another Wade) who works at the same university (in Argentina) as me and who happened to drive me to work today. Here's my prophetic view on things (assuming a meteorite doesn't strike the earth, or there isn't world economic collapse, etc.): genetics wil replace physics as THE science of the 21st century and will replace computer science as THE technology of the 21st century. So go and study genetics, kids. And try not to fuck people over with what you learn .

You've just summarised the most beautiful aspect of science. We love it when new evidence proves our old ideas wrong. That means we've learned something.

It's newer, but it's still wrong - it just has to wait to be proved wrong! Unlike Christianity, which has been stuck on the same wrong ideas for the past 2000 years. Steve

(species tree)≠(gene tree). not for all loci, anyways. and, evolutionary biologists dont say "OMG WE'RE RIGHT" but rather "the best evidence we have right now supports this theory." we also dont tag the end with "and if you dont beleive our theory, you will be punished by part of our theory, for eternity." i'd be a lot more interested in seeing their results for chromosome 2 than 23. the single biggest difference in genome architecture between humans and the other great apes is that they have an extra pair of chromosomes. our #2 corosponds to their 2 and 3, fused. we are the only ones with 23 instead of 24 out of humans, chimps, gorrillas and orangatans.

Getting rid of self limiting beliefs is a central tenet of science that I aspire to as well. Here's another good example of science in action. http://www.millerandlevine.com/...vol/Moths/moths.html
