I heard a rumour that if you stay at the mountain house you can climb (legally) at Skytop. Can anyone comment on whether this is so. I know how expensive it is, but we are looking for something for a special occaision, and would love to do some routes at Skytop (and stay somewhere nice as well). Thanks.....

As far as I have heard you can't climb there but business is business so with a little of "nice talk" you might get things done. Talk to them before you come over from Endland.

I asked this exact question a few years ago and was told in no uncertain terms: NO. Yet I still have the article from the local paper that describes the wonderful accomodations and activities that the Mohonk Mtn House offers. It mentions a Teen Weekend program that includes outdoor activities including, you guessed it, rock climbing. I smell hypocrisy. Although at the rate they're buidling indoor rec facilities up there, it would not surprise me if the MMH has (or soon will build) an indoor climbing wall. They have indoor swimming and covered, refrigerated ice skating. The latter is a concession to either global warming or their liability lawyers, vis a vis skating on the lake right in front of the hotel.

Mike at his usual sarcastic best, but he's basically right. Don't expect to legally climb at Skytop now or anytime soon...incredible rock though....some may remember the days gone by....

You do realize that Skytop is not the only climbable cliff on MMH property?

If your brave enough to climb with out the aid of a guidebook, I hear the rock at Bonticuo (sp?) is very similiar to the rock at Sky Top. Sorry though, Sky Top doesnt look like an option.

Actually check out the latest issue of Alpinist (#21). There is an article about climbing at Skytop. The deal is as such: stay at the Mohonk Mountain House and hire a guide, then you can climb at Skytop. That will cost about $500/day. I don't remember which guiding service is hooked up with the deal, but I'm sure gunks.com or the Mtn. House will have the answers. This program was confirmed by a local during my last Gunks visit in the fall (2007).
