Went to see a lecture about BASE-jumping recently, and the guy giving the lecture showed a picture of a launcher they'd been shown by some French BASE jumpers.

To propel themselves into the air they had 2 x 100m cranes, a 40:1 pulley system, a 24 tonne concrete weight and a coffin style launch cradle.

*apparently* it was necessary to lie down whilst being launched because otherwise you would pass out from the G-force which they had estimated to be about 8G's!
