Oh good, now we can have three magazines with the same articles same, pics. Those photagraphers don't need any money.... The cheapest sports industry just got cheaper. I guess they can all meet at the carbondale Java Jolt and decide on articles and who gets to run the rehash and who gets the original all while sipping there favorite triple capadoche. Its all fodder for the back of the toilet anyway. Rock and climbing Urban Ice Allpenis

This is really bad news--Urban Climber sucks. Have you ever noticed how hard it is to read--not just the bad writing but the awful design??

I didn't realize industry leadership was based on quantities sold. So I guess McDonalds is the leader in cuisine and GM is the leader in automotive manufacturing. I better get rid of my iBook and buy a Dell so I can use some leading Microsoft software. Maybe after I finish my Big Mac I'll drive my Chevy to do some shopping at America's leading retailer, Wal Mart. If Urban Climber and Climbing are leading, I ain't following.

You obviously didn't get my point. I use a Mac too, because it's better, but that doesn't change the fact that from a business stand point that Microsoft is the company in charge. It's from that stand point that I think Urban Climber/Climbing are making their claim, I'm not saying that they are better in any way.

kmc wrote: Alpinist does make most of its money through subscriptions and sales That's based on the false assumption that Alpinist actually MAKES money, which it does not, not ever has. The sole reason that it continues to exist is because a very rich dude has been bankrolling it since its inception. And from what I understand, Chris Beckwith has to grovel every year for him to continue to fund the mag. That is why Alpinist has so few ads and why the content is so f-ing amazing. Otherwise it would be just another shit-heap of used tiolet paper like Urban Climber etc. The best way to keep mags like Alpinist around is to actually BUY a subscription. Edit: spelling

Let me see if I understand this. So, instead of having two shitty magazines, owned by different corporations, we will now have two shitty magazines owned by the same corporation? Well that just does it. I quit.

I hear you JH_Angel, if we're looking at numbers only, you're right. Leadership, however, has more facets than just being in front.

The first time I pick up an issue of Urban Climber I honestly thought it was a joke. I cringe at the thought that it is not. I have all issues of climbing magazine from issue 1 to issue 238. I have not read a single issue since 238. I stopped reading it because it was completely full of crap. It is nice to have all of the old ones to reference because they had good articals about climbing areas I visit. That has sadly been replaced with totally unreadable crap. So Urban climber buys climbing mag. Who really gives a shit? THey both suck. If Urban climber had bought Alpinist then I would be pissed. Buy a fucking Alpinist subscription and keep the only worthwhile climbing mag alive.

The most interesting thing here is that, once again, we see that climbing holds little interest to the mainstream. If the parents will allow Climbing to get dumped to a start-up rag like UC, its perceived value must be almost nothing, and the literal value even less. Once again, we see that people with money have little interest in climbing. Probably means fewer watch ads, on the postitive side. On the negative, even less editing and, since they already echewed such basic magazine policies as fact checking et al, there probably isn't really much else they can cut out. Literary standards will suck, 'cause they suck at UC. But since they're already bad, I can only see this at a catalyst to make Climbing more of a grass routes production, which can really only be a good thing.

The latest issue of Climbing had 82 pages....and how many of actual content? Seems like most of their staff are off skiing, ice climbing (out west, not in the east!) or rock climbing in Mexico! Not that there's anything wrong with that...as long as folks realize what they are paying for. If you can find it, check out an older issue of Climbing, or Rock and Ice....from the 70's or early 80's...you'll see a publication that much more closely resembles today's Alpinist-which likely evolved from the de-evolution of the other mags, for one thing. Younger readers may not realize how much crap they are fed, since they have no earlier point of reference.

hasbeen wrote: Once again, we see that people with money have little interest in climbing. I did a little experiment on the popularity of climbing in the past couple weeks (unscientific). I was at the Phoenix airport the other day, and the newsagent there had both Surfer and Surfing, but no climbing mags (although they did have other things like backpacker and outside.) Yesterday I was at the Sacramento library, and it was the exact same thing. Two land locked towns, and Phoenix a 10 hour drive from any surf, and they've got surfing mags, but no climbing?!?! Well GOOD sez I. Climbing's great, and I love talking about it, but the less main stream, the better.
